This job is for experienced police officers in Tacoma, Washington, who handle daily patrols, respond to emergencies, investigate crimes, and build community relationships to keep the city safe.

Candidates must already have completed a state police academy and live in Washington to qualify as an 'Exceptional Hire.'
The City of Tacoma is seeking in-state Police Officer candidates (Exceptional Hire) to join the Tacoma Police Department.
A Police Officer applicant is determined to be an "Exceptional Hire" candidate if they have successfully completed the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission law enforcement academy AND meet the other minimum qualifications for this classification - see below.
Candidates hired from this exam will be placed at step 2 ($54.02)* in the hiring range. Please note, step placement is at the discretion of the hiring authority and is subject to change at any time.

The City of Tacoma is seeking motivated, community focused Police Officer (Exceptional Hire) to join the Tacoma Police Department.
You will play a crucial part in police work involving the protection of life and property and keeping Tacoma safe.
The job classification of Police Officer (Exceptional Hire) is classified and represented.
Police Officer (Exceptional Hire) perform general duty police work involving the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, maintenance of order, and prevention and investigation of crimes.
Less than twelve (12) months of experience as a fully commissioned law enforcement officer in the state of Washington, with no more than a 12-month break in service.
NOTE: Non-patrol sworn officer experience, such as jail/corrections/court, or dispatch, does not count toward the required experience in calculating the total months of post-commissioned experience.

Applicants must pass all phases both before and after the eligibility list is established, including driving record, credit history, conviction/arrest record, work history, reference check, oral board interview and polygraph examination.Applicants who are eligible for veterans scoring criteria (Veterans Preference) MUST attach a copy of their DD-214 member copy 4 (proof of military discharge form) at time of application to be eligible for review for Veteran's Preference points.
