Full Job Description

A full-time position is available for Medical Director of the Acute Inpatient Team at the VA North Texas Health Care System Mental Health Service (VANTHCS MHS) in Dallas, TX.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Podiatrist Basic Requirements United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Education: Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted.

~AND~ Residency Training: Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.

Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training.

~AND~ Licensure and Registration: Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.

Preferred Experience: -Board eligible or certified in Psychiatry by ABPN or AOBNP -ECT treatment experience -Buprenorphine treatment experience -Significant Mental Health leadership and administrative experience -Significant Veterans Affairs Mental Health experience Grade Determinations: Service Chief, Section Chief or Line Manager: A service chief or line manager podiatrist must demonstrate the following: (1) Outstanding professional ability in the practice of medicine or a medical specialty; and (2) Ability to guide the development and implementation of programs, within their respective domain.

These programs would include, but are not limited to, medical practice, professional standards, personnel issues, and quality and performance improvement.

Physical Requirements: The position requires moderate lifting and carrying (15- 44 pounds), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, walking (8 hours), both legs required, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, both eyes required, hearing (aid permitted), and mental and emotional stability.

Major Duties:

Core responsibilities include leading and coordinating the operations of a multidisciplinary inpatient mental health team with a focus on uninterrupted high-quality care to Veterans.

Incumbent monitors and ensures compliance with hospital and mental health policies, regulations, executive orders and management directives.

Incumbent will collaborate with other teams/team leaders to improve communication and to ensure ongoing continuity of care for Veterans.

In conjunction with the Clinical Director of this Mental Health Team, you will plan, organize, and direct administrative, operational, patient and personnel activities for the team.

Duties include coordinating interdisciplinary staffing, work assignments, resource allocation and direct patient care.

You must be skilled in general psychiatry, including diagnostic evaluations, pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy.

You should be competent in the management of individuals with a broad range of acute clinical problems, including but not limited to post-traumatic stress disorder, mood, anxiety and psychotic disorders, substance use disorders and psychiatric disorders in the elderly Veteran population.

You will serve as a collaborative member of a multidisciplinary mental health team.

VANTHCS MHS provides a full range of mental health services including general adult psychiatry, geriatrics, psychosomatic medicine, substance abuse sub-specialty services, trauma services, psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery programs, comprehensive homeless programs, peer support services, opiate replacement programs, Intensive Community Mental Health Recovery (ICMHR), vocational rehabilitation programs, domiciliary based programs and inpatient services.

There is ongoing active research in addiction psychiatry, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, mood disorders, and homelessness.

Clinical training programs exist for medical students, psychiatry residents and fellows, clinical psychologists, social workers and nurses.

VA North Texas Health Care System has an active relationship with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center as our primary affiliate, as well as other local teaching institutions.

Work Schedule: Full-time; Monday through Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm with light on-call responsibilities.
