Full Job Description

The Colorado Department of Military & Veterans Affairs (DMVA) has four major operational divisions: Army National Guard, Air National Guard, Civil Air Patrol, and Veterans Affairs. These divisions utilize state and federal resources to provide our communities, State, and nation with a ready military force for national defense and state emergency response as well as providing assistance to our Colorado Veterans.

Requirements

This position works for our Air National Guard Division, Civil Engineering section at Buckley Air Force Base located in Aurora and occasionally at Ft. Carson Firing Range and Greeley Air National Guard Station. The plumber is responsible for the repair, installation, maintenance, inspection, and troubleshooting of building plumbing systems (gas, water, sewer, chilled and hot water piping), plumbing fixtures, domestic water heaters, boilers, pumps, and backflow preventers. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
  • performing routine plumbing maintenance, repairing, and installing of water, sanitary sewer, gas piping systems, domestic water heaters, oil water separators, pumps, valves, and plumbing fixtures;
  • performing yearly testing on all backflow devices;
  • preparing, documenting, and keeping accurate records of preventative maintenance, testing, and checks;
  • responding to building manager needs, concerns, problems, etc. and independently diagnosing problems, ordering correct materials, and addressing issues;
  • estimating labor, material and replacement parts costs;
  • directing, assisting and training other building trades sections and lesser skilled co-workers;
  • completing daily and monthly time sheets;
  • reading and interpreting national and local codes, technical orders, blue prints, operating manuals, diagrams, and schematics to ensure proper installations, code compliance, and preventative maintenance is performed on all equipment;
  • assisting engineers in new construction and remodels; and
  • developing and maintaining a comprehensive filing and documentation system for preventative maintenance, work orders, purchasing, warranties, etc. pertaining to all plumbing-related duties.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Three years of progressively responsible professional plumbing experience that involved utilizing and maintaining comprehensive preventative maintenance.

OR

Possession of a current, journey-level plumber license issued by the State of Colorado.

Necessary Special Requirements

  • Must be able to pass a background check at initial employment (felony or drug convictions are not consistent with base security requirements).
  • Must be able to work overtime as needed.
  • Must be physically able to perform strenuous physical labor.
  • Must be willing to be available for call-back as needed.
  • Must be willing to work in other departments (plowing snow) as needed that may result in overtime or working on scheduled days off.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Able to stand, walk, climb, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach above the shoulder.
  • Able to constantly lift and carry ten pounds, frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Able to push, pull, have manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, near and far vision, hearing abilities, and be able to verbally communicate with others.
  • Able to work inside, work alone, perform duties in extreme cold/heat, work above ground, work with chemicals/solvents, work around noise and vibrations, walk on uneven surfaces, operate moving equipment/vehicles, climb on a ladder, work in a small and confined space, work with machinery, and work in hazardous conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates who possess a Backflow Certification. If the selected candidate does not have a Backflow Certification, it must be obtained within six months of hire. This position will work Tuesday through Friday, 6:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a 45 minute lunch break. This position will also assist other departments performing a variety of duties when the need arises, such as snow emergencies. This position is also subject to call-back for after hour emergencies.
