Summary

This job involves working as a pipefitter at a naval base in Virginia, where you'll help install, repair, and maintain high-pressure water and piping systems under close supervision.

Full Job Description

You will serve as a Pipefitter in the Production Division, Public Works Department Naval Station Norfolk, of Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Mid-Atlantic.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job.

Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: The ability to perform common tasks including 1) Assisting in installing, modifying, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing industrial or domestic high-temperature water and high-pressure piping systems and equipment; 2) Assisting with planning, laying out and installing piping systems and equipment from blueprints, sketches, etc.; 3) Assisting with performing soft soldering and silver brazing with an oxyacetylene torch.

You work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

  • You will interpret pipefitting assignments (e.g., work orders, building plans, blueprints) to meet workload requirements.
  • You will make pressure joints (e.g., threaded, flanged welded, flange bolted, brazed, soldered, silver brazed) to install piping sections.
  • You will calculate pipe, joint, or valve sizes needed to support pressures of systems.
  • You will inspect and test systems for damage, leaks, and blockages in lines, expansion joints, valves and traps.
  • You will determine causes of problems and recommend corrective action on pipefitting work.
