Job Description

Summary

This job involves traveling across several Michigan counties to inspect radiation facilities, check for compliance with state health rules, and eventually become certified to inspect mammography equipment.

It also includes advising people on radiation safety.

A good fit would be someone with a physics or engineering background who enjoys fieldwork, problem-solving, and learning specialized inspection skills.

  • Ability to travel daily/frequently within Huron, Lapeer, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Sanilac, St. Clair, Tuscola, and Wayne Counties
  • Reside in Michigan (relocation required if outside the state)

The general function and purpose of the job is: (1) to investigate radiation facilities for the purpose of determining compliance with Michigan’s Ionizing Radiation Rules and Part 135 of the Public Health Code and (2) gain the necessary experience and expertise to allow subsequent certification as a mammography inspector pursuant to the federal Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) program.

The job also involves consulting with and advising persons about radiation protection matters.

Position Description - Physicist 9-P11

The Health Physicist works from a home office; however, this is a field position that requires the establishment of the “Official Work Station” for travel purposes in Lapeer, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St.

Clair or Wayne County. All work must be performed in Michigan. If you currently reside outside of Michigan, you must relocate to Michigan to perform the duties of this position.

Requirements

Education
Possession of a bachelor's degree or higher in physics or nuclear engineering.

Experience

Physicist 9
No specific type or amount is required.

Physicist 10
One year of professional experience determining the presence of radioactive materials equivalent to a Physicist 9.

Physicist P11
Two years of professional experience determining the presence of radioactive materials equivalent to a Physicist, including one year equivalent to a Physicist 10.
