Full Job Description

The John D. Dingell Sleep-Wake Disorders Center is an AASM-accredited sleep center with multiple sleep clinics and a state-of-the art sleep laboratory with 8 beds.

The Sleep Center cosponsors an ACGME-accredited Sleep Fellowship program in conjunction with Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSU-SOM).

There is a growing basic and clinical research program at Detroit VA with both intramural and extramural research funding.

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement.

Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

(NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.

Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs).

PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis.

PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.

Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English.

The duties of the section chief include: Provide clinical leadership and operational oversight for Sleep Medicine services at John D.

Dingell VA Medical Center (hub) Oversee expansion of clinical initiatives, including expanding services to referring spoke sites, collaborating with current spoke sites, adopting new EHR, among other initiatives Attend section, division, national sleep program clinical and administrative staff meetings as required Responsible for maintaining an up-to-date on-call schedule that provides coverage, including evening and weekends as appropriate Collaborate to ensure appropriate staffing levels are maintained and well-qualified staff is recruited.

Ensure continuous AASM-accreditation to maintain high-caliber as a Sleep Center of Excellence in VISN 10.

Deliver and supervise complex inpatient and outpatient sleep care, including consult services and in lab sleep studies, home sleep apnea tests, actigraphy studies, other studies.

Advance education & research: Serve as a clinician-educator-research faculty member with scholarly and educational activities; hold a faculty appointment at Wayne State University (academic rank commensurate with experience).

Drive quality & improvement: Lead process improvement initiatives and champion high-reliability principles across the section and meet and exceed metrics required for the program.

Provides performance improvement opportunities to section staff as appropriate. This includes but is not limited to performing FPPE/OPPEs and yearly performance evaluations.

Mentor and supervise trainees: Sleep fellows, residents and medical students regularly rotate in Sleep Medicine clinics; the incumbent will guide training and curriculum development, give didactic lectures to fellows, residents and participate in academic activities such as journal reviews, Grand rounds, conferences, and lectures.

Any other duties as assigned by the supervising physician or his/her designee as it relates to scope of practice.

Work Schedule: Full time: Monday-Friday, 8:00 A.M.-4:30 P.M.; however, subject to change, depending on the needs of the service/medical center.

On-call responsibility nightly and weekends (unless coverage responsibilities are shared/traded with other sleep physicians) as per service needs; in-person call as required.
