This job is for a hospitalist doctor at a VA medical center in the Bronx, where you'll provide round-the-clock medical care to hospitalized veterans, manage their treatment plans, and help with their discharge.
It also involves teaching medical students or residents and handling some administrative tasks.
A good fit would be an experienced internal medicine physician who enjoys working with veterans and has strong skills in patient care and teamwork.
Education and length of practice are considered through a formal pay-setting process to determine the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay) To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement.
Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
(NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs).
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis.
PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: In Accordance With VA Directive and Handbook 5019 Major Duties:
This position is located within the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA) at the James J.
Peters (JJP) Bronx VA Medical Center, affiliated with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
The incumbent serves as a Staff Physician (Hospitalist), General Internal Medicine, with responsibilities in clinical care, teaching, and administrative service.
Major duties include, but are not limited to: Provide comprehensive inpatient medical care to Veterans admitted to General Internal Medicine services on teaching and non-teaching units at the JJP Bronx VAMC.
Perform admission evaluations, ongoing inpatient management, and discharge planning for assigned patients; document attending-level admission notes, progress notes, and discharge summaries in the VA electronic health record.
Direct and coordinate care for acutely ill hospitalized patients with general medical conditions (excluding ICU-level care).
Ensure that care delivery is safe, timely, efficient, evidence-based, patient-centered, and compliant with VHA policies and national quality standards.
Provide weekday inpatient medicine consultations to non-medical services, including Psychiatry and Substance Use Disorder residential treatment programs.
Provide perioperative medical consultations to surgical services as assigned.
Collaborate with Advanced Practice Providers (NPs/PAs) in the evaluation, treatment, and documentation of patients admitted to Mental Health units during Medicine/Psychiatry rotations.
Participate in the medical evaluation and ongoing management of patients in residential treatment programs, including development and modification of medical care plans to meet regulatory and accreditation requirements.
Conduct outpatient clinical duties, including participation in perioperative or general medicine clinics and a weekly medicine clinic for residential treatment patients to address acute medical needs and reduce avoidable emergency department utilization.
Ensure timely and effective transitions of care, including discharge planning and coordination of follow-up with primary care and specialty services.
Supervise, teach, and evaluate medical residents, fellows, and medical students from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and affiliated training programs while assigned to teaching services.
Work closely with Chief Medical Residents and program leadership to ensure appropriate supervision and educational oversight of trainees.
Lead and coordinate interdisciplinary care teams, including physicians, trainees, pharmacists, nurses, and other allied health professionals.
Participate in quality improvement, peer review, utilization management, and patient safety activities as assigned.
Serve on medical center and service-level committees as needed to support clinical operations, education, and quality initiatives.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Service Chief or designee, consistent with scope of practice, VA policy, and service needs VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package.
