Job Description

Summary

This job is for a lead pharmacist in a federal prison in Texarkana, Texas, where you'll manage all pharmacy operations, dispense medications to inmates, ensure safe and proper use of drugs, and supervise a team of pharmacy staff.

It's ideal for an experienced pharmacist who wants to work in a secure government setting, helping with inmate health care while following strict rules for public safety.

You'll need strong leadership skills and a focus on both clinical care and administrative tasks.

Key Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in Pharmacy (Pharm.D. or equivalent) from an ACPE-accredited program
  • Current, active, and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a U.S. state, DC, Puerto Rico, or territory
  • At least one year of professional pharmacy experience equivalent to GS-11 level for GS-12 consideration
  • Experience in dispensing medications, providing patient education on usage and side effects
  • Knowledge of medication properties, clinical effects, and proper storage/handling procedures
  • Supervisory experience directing pharmacists and technicians in an integrated pharmacy program
  • Ability to distinguish basic colors and pass credentialing including validation of education and licensure

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements: Basic Requirements: Education: A doctoral degree in Pharmacy that is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S.

Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. OR 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree, Ph.D., Pharm.D. OR equivalent doctoral degree.

AND Licensure: Applicants also must be licensed to practice pharmacy in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

NOTE: ALL applicants MUST upload proof of current, active and unrestricted license for verification at the time you apply. AND Medical Requirement: Must be able to distinguish basic colors.

NOTE: Employees currently assigned to positions in this occupational series as of September 2017 will be considered to have met the basic requirements for the position occupied.

Applicants who meet the Basic Requirements are qualified at the GS-11 level.

GS-12: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements above, applicants must have a minimum of one year of professional pharmacy experience that is equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.

Education: There is no substitution of education for specialized experience for this position.

Experience: Applicant's qualifications background must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary to perform the work of the position.

Pharmacy work requires knowledge of the use, clinical effects, and composition of medications, including their chemical, biological, and physical properties.

Qualifying professional pharmacy experience may involve, but is not limited to: Dispensing medications prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners and providing information to health practitioners and patients about proper usage of medications and side effects; Evaluating medication use patterns and outcomes for patients in hospitals or managed care organizations; Performing administrative, consultative, or staff advisory work for a medical facility's pharmacy program; Planning, monitoring and evaluating medication programs or regimens; Establishing medication-handling procedures for the storage and preservation of medications; Researching medical literature and/or clinical medication information to provide accurate responses to inquiries; and/or Maintaining all medication records required by law.

Experience in planning and providing a completely integrated pharmacy program and coordinating these programs with all other departments within the institution.

Experience in determining that all medications are properly packaged and labeled. Experience in dispensing pharmaceuticals in accordance with proper procedures.

Experience in supervising and directing subordinate staff consisting of Staff Pharmacists and/or Pharmacy Technician's (which may include civil service and/or Public Health Service staff).

All qualified referred candidates will undergo a credentialing process prior to employment with the Bureau of Prisons.

This process includes validation of examinations, licensure, education, internship and residency.

**Your eligibility for consideration will be based on your responses to the questions in the application** Major Duties:

Responsible for all aspects of pharmacy operations including dispensing, pharmaceutical care, clinical and community relations, and accreditation compliance.

Plans and provides a completely integrated pharmacy program and coordinates these programs with all other departments within the institution.

Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the medication delivery system and assures that the integrity of all medications are maintained and are properly stored.

Determines that all medications are properly packaged and labeled.

Responsible for the institution's pharmaceutical budget and ensures national contract compliance as the COTR for the Preferred Prime Vendor (PPV) program, VA contracts, FSS, GSA, and mandatory contracts as they pertain to medication ordering.

Responsible for participating in quality assurance activities regarding medications. Responsible for the appropriate development and performance of Drug Usage Evaluations (DUE).

Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution.

The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and is performed on a regular and recurring basis.
