Job Description

Summary

This job involves checking the backgrounds of people applying to be firefighters in San Antonio, including verifying their work history, character, and qualifications to ensure they meet department standards.

Key Requirements

  • Pass a CJIS fingerprint-based background check and maintain eligibility (no felony convictions, certain misdemeanors, or open arrests)
  • Knowledge of personnel investigation techniques and methodologies
  • Experience applying and interpreting employment laws (e.g., Fair Labor Standards Act, Equal Employment Opportunity, Americans with Disabilities Act)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Full Job Description

Under general supervision, is responsible for performing personnel investigative work relating to Fire Fighter entrance processes including work history, character and credentials of applicants into the SA Fire Department. Exercises no supervision.

Work Hours
7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday

Requirements

Investigates all applicants under employment consideration to determine and verify past work history, character, and work qualifications.Meets with applicants to discuss Personal History Statements.Conducts criminal investigation and driving records compliance verifications through the Texas Criminal Investigations Center and Federal Bureau Investigations.Conducts workshops for Candidate Physical Assessment Testing and proctors Ergometrics evaluations.Submits written reports of all investigation findings to appropriate authority and prepares necessary correspondence, as required by the particulars of the investigation.Completes disqualification letters and compiles packets when applicants appeal to Fire Fighter' and Police Civil Service Commission.Completes summaries of investigations for City Manager review and approval.Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Qualifications Two years of college from an accredited college or university with preferable coursework in Human Resources, investigations, or related field.

  • Two (2) years of experience in investigatory work, preferably personnel investigations.
  • Valid Class “C” Driver’s License.
  • Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility.

    Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and Family Violence Convictions.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Polygraph examination experience.
    • Knowledge of personnel investigation techniques and methodologies.
    • Experience in performing personnel investigations.
    • Experience in applying and interpreting employment law, such as the Fair Labor Standards Act, Equal Employment Opportunity, and the American with Disabilities Act.
    • Experience with Microsoft Office (specifically Outlook, Word, Excel, & PowerPoint).
    Applicant Information

    Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job.

    One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months.

    One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
