  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Grade of B or higher in the course to be tutored (A preferred)

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Attendance at tutor training sessions
  • Punctuality and accurate record-keeping for sessions and time worked

Full Job Description

*Must be currently enrolled at MTC*

  • MTC Peer tutors are current MTC students who promote student learning and academic success by helping to explain concepts from specific courses to other currently-enrolled MTC students.
  • Peer tutors conduct one-on-one or group tutoring sessions on a regular basis. Peer tutors also lead study group sessions on a regular or as-needed basis throughout the semester.
  • Peer tutors do not complete homework assignments, tests, or projects for students but rather help students to become more independent learners by explaining difficult concepts and serving as models of good studying, test-taking, and learning strategies.
  • Peer tutors must attend tutor training sessions and be punctual for all tutoring/study group sessions. Peer tutors must keep accurate records of tutoring/study group sessions. Peer tutors must maintain accurate records of their time worked and submit their time in a punctual manner.
  • Peer tutors help students set academic goals and monitor progress toward those goals.

The number of hours peer tutors work will vary based on their availability and student demand for tutoring in specific courses.

Courses for which there is often a demand for tutoring include: Spanish, accounting, biology, chemistry, economics, etc.

Midlands Technical College is dedicated to providing excellent service to its students, employees, and the community.

This position is located on the Airport, Beltline and Northeast Campuses in the Academic Success Center.

    Requirements

Must have excellent interpersonal communication skills. Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Peer tutors must have a grade of B or higher in the course that they'd like to tutor. Additionally, applicants must receive a faculty recommendation. Please list the appropriate faculty member and contact information on your application. Exceptions to some qualification requirements may be made by the Director of the ASC after consultation with a faculty member from the relevant department. For example, a student who exempted a course by earning credit on an AP exam or native speakers of a language who have not taken a language course may still be able to tutor after meeting with the ASC Director and a faculty member to vet the peer tutor candidate's level of proficiency and ability to tutor.

    Qualifications

GPA of 3.5 or higher and an A in the course(s) to be tutored.
