Job Description

Summary

This job involves helping people with mental health or substance use issues by sharing personal experiences to build trust, offering information and resources, and guiding them to support that fits their recovery goals.

It requires working in a walk-in center in Minneapolis, sometimes accompanying clients to appointments, and coordinating with a team to provide caring, non-judgmental services.

A good fit would be someone with their own recovery background who enjoys connecting with others in a community health setting and has some experience in outreach or social services.

Key Requirements

  • Current regular or probationary employee of Hennepin County Human Services and Public Health (internal applicants only)
  • One of: two years or more of college in social/behavioral sciences or related field, or two years of experience in community outreach or public health
  • Valid driver's license and ability to obtain Hennepin County driver's permit for transporting residents
  • Lived experience with mental health or substance use disorders to provide peer support
  • Certification as a Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) or eligibility and willingness to obtain within six months
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week, including evenings and weekends, in an on-site walk-in center
  • Proficiency in documenting in Electronic Health Records System (EPIC) and using Outlook

Full Job Description

Hennepin County's Behavioral Health area has an exciting opportunity for a Peer Support Specialist, Senior to work in the Behavioral Health Center.

The Behavioral Health Center serves Hennepin County residents living with substance use disorders (SUD) and/or mental health (MH) conditions.

The Peer Support Specialist will establish connections with residents anchored in a shared lived experience, provide MH and SUD information and resources to residents, normalize and validate lived experiences, and connect clients to resources that match their stated recovery goals.


Location and hours:
This position is on-site and located on the first floor at the Behavioral Health Center at 1800 Chicago Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55404. The walk-in services are currently offered Monday through Sunday from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. This position will work 40 hours per week between the hours of 8 a.m. and 9:30 p.m., which may include weekend hours. No holidays are required. This position primarily works in the walk-in center with the possibility of going out into the community to accompany residents.

In this position, you will:
  • Communicate with interdisciplinary team members during team meetings and on an individual basis to coordinate collaborative care for residents that is rooted in a harm reduction and non-coercive service delivery model.
  • Provide MH and SUD information and resources to residents, normalize and validate lived experiences, and connect clients to resources that match their stated recovery goal.
  • Provide person-centered services that honor resident's choice and agency and actively engages them in decisions about their own life and health.
  • As needed, accompany individuals to appointments in the community related to treatment, support, and meeting basic needs
  • Document, initiate, and maintain case records in Electronic Health Records System (EPIC), and respond to messages in Outlook, and via phone.
  • Provide outreach and engagement with residents in withdrawal management.

Need to have:
  • One of the following:
    • Completion of two years or more of college in social/behavioral sciences or another field related to the area.
    • Two years or more of experience working in a community outreach or public health setting.
  • A valid driver's license, and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County drivers permit to transport, with another staff member, residents to appointments in a Hennepin County vehicle.

Nice to have:
  • Be a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) or be eligible and willing to become a CPRS within the first six months of employment.
  • Experience with:
    • Serving individuals living with SUD and/or MH conditions.
    • Applying Harm Reduction principles in a work or community setting.
  • Ability to:
    • Function well in unpredictable and challenging situations calling for sensitivity, flexibility, and resourcefulness.
    • Work well in a group setting and be accountable to the team.
    • Interact effectively and respectfully with residents that come to the center for support.
    • Effectively interact with people from diverse backgrounds including efforts towards disparity reduction.
  • Knowledge of:
    • County and community resources for MH, SUD, social services, and basic needs.
    • Person-Centered Thinking and Harm Reduction principles.
    • Civil commitment process.


Candidates with fluency in another language in addition to English are encouraged to apply. Bilingual candidates who pass a language assessment may qualify for additional bilingual pay and duties.
