Full Job Description

San Mateo County Parks Department is seeking individuals to assist Park Rangers with seasonal facility maintenance, including cleaning restrooms and collecting garbage; resource management; visitor services; gatehouse duties; and trail maintenance. The ideal candidate will have the ability to learn new skills, the ability to follow directions, and a strong commitment to provide exemplary customer service to park visitors.

This position requires driving to different park locations and handling power-driven tools and machines. Candidates selected for this position must have a valid California driver license or equivalent and must be at least 18 years of age at the date of hire due to Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) restrictions.

The salary range is $21.88 - $27.39 Hourly. Extra-help positions offer temporary employment for up to 1040 hours which is equivalent to about six months full-time, however, employment might end sooner depending on the needs of the hiring department. Extra-help positions are paid on an hourly rate basis and provide some benefits. Extra-help workers are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the extra-help assignment.

Requirements

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Perform light construction and maintenance on park and marina facilities.Maintain cleanliness of park and marina facilities.Repair, operate and maintain various types of tools and equipment.Assist the public by providing information on park and marina facilities, features, and regulations.Administer and inform public of general rules and regulations governing activities such as: illegal camping, vandalism, general public safety, and boat operation.Respond to emergency situations and administer first aid and CPR.Respond to public complaints, inquiries and suggestions.Perform moderately heavy physical labor for extended periods of time.Provide support at any County park as required.Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications Knowledge of:Driving and operating automobiles, light trucks, safety equipment and other motorized equipment safely.

  • Communicating effectively orally and in writing.
  • Natural resources, native and invasive vegetation and local wildlife species.

  • Skill/Ability to:
    • Learn and apply policies, procedures, and safety regulations related to park operations to which assigned.
    • Learn to operate equipment and avoid safety hazards related to park and marina environments.
    • Follow oral and written instructions including safety rules, procedures and practices.
    • Work courteously and effectively with the public and with co-workers.
    • Operate motor vehicles and other equipment.
    • Stand, walk, and bend for extended periods of time.
    • Lift items weighing up to 60 pounds.
    • Work outdoors regardless of weather conditions.
    • Use hand, electric and pneumatic power tools.
    • Perform clerical tasks including keeping accurate records, making simple arithmetic calculations, handling cash, and filing.
    • Maintain cleanliness of park and marina facilities.
    • Perform light construction, repair and maintenance of facilities and equipment.
    • Perform landscaping, ground maintenance, pruning, lawn and plant care.
    • Operate motor vehicles and other equipment.
