The Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (USDB) invites you to consider an enjoyable and gratifying employment opportunity with our Agency.  We are looking for a caring and motivated Paraprofessional to work with our deaf/hard-of-hearing students under the supervision of an Instructor for the Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing.  This position is located in the St. George area.gratifying employment opportunity with our Agency. We are looking for two caring and motivated Paraprofessionals to work with our deaf/hard-of-hearing students under the supervision of an Instructor for the Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing. These positions are located in the St. George area.

The Paraprofessional assists a classroom instructor in working with deaf/hard-of-hearing students, who may have additional disabilities.

*Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday 8:45 am to 4:15 pm, 181 days each school year.*

Roles and Responsibilities
As a Paraprofessional you will:
  • Prepare teaching materials and tutor individual students under the supervision of the instructor.
  • Communicate the progress of the students to the instructor.
  • Perform such duties as may relate to the motivation and achievement of students in academic and skills areas.
  • Assist with behavior interventions under the direction of the instructor.
  • Assist with routine daily activities, i.e. bus duty, recess, lunch, bathroom, etc.;
  • Provide support in a classroom environment by working directly with teachers and students.
  • Maintain accurate records and logs.
  • Maintain calendars; schedules and coordinates appointments.
  • Design and/or prepare training/instructional materials, teaching aids and devices.
Minimum Requirements
The Ideal Candidate for this position will have:
  • Practical knowledge of basic classroom techniques and organization.
  • Signing skills preferred.
  • Techniques for assisting and providing effective support to classroom instructors.
  • Practical skills in working effectively with students.
  • Safe and timely response to special classroom situations.
  • Ability to follow written and/or verbal instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Enter, transcribe, record, store, or maintain information in either written or electronic form.
  • Deal with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Transporting students to and from school may be required.

Additional Information

  • There are risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g. being subject to possible physical attack. (Risks are related to the possibility of working with students who are non-compliant, self-abusive, and/or aggressive.)
  • These positions have strenuous physical requirements such as long periods of standing, walking, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities and recurring lifting of students (some with limited mobility) and/or their personal needs equipment.

    Must be able to lift and carry over 50 pounds.

  • Preference may be given to applicants with previous experience working with disabled children; MANDT training; a valid Utah driver license with clean driving record.
  • Successful completion of criminal background check contingent upon employment.
  • These are part-time positions for nine (9) months (181 days) each school year. Work schedule Monday through Thursday, thirty (30) hours per week.
