Workers' Compensation Commission
This paralegal role supports the legal team at South Carolina's Workers' Compensation Commission by handling research, drafting documents, managing case files for enforcement hearings, and responding to public records requests.
It involves organizing evidence, tracking expenses, and ensuring compliance with privacy rules in a busy litigation environment.
Ideal candidates are detail-oriented individuals with administrative experience in a legal setting who enjoy supporting attorneys and working with regulations.
Assists the Workers’ Compensation Commission Legal Department with legal research; draft legal memoranda, letters, briefs, discovery requests, and other legal documents; internal and external case litigation file management to include the production and organization of evidence for Rule to Show Cause files; and responding to FOIA requests and Commission file subpoenas;
Manage the Legal Department's Rule to Show Cause Hearing process for non-compliant employers and carriers. Ensures case files are accurate, thoroughly documented, and well-organized.
Reviews carrier fines and works and assists the General Counsel with proper prosecution and resolution. Works with process servers to ensure proper service of hearing notices.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, policies, and organizational functions. Knowledge of legal research techniques and legal database software.
Knowledge of legal communication principles and practices. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to perform legal research in accordance with preliminary instructions as to methods or approach, source material available, and policy and precedent of the office.
