Typical requirements: 1 year specialized experience at GS-10. Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 years graduate study.
Note: Actual salary includes locality pay (15-40%+ depending on location).
This role as a Paralegal Specialist in the Navy's Office of Special Trial Counsel involves supporting military legal teams by managing office tasks, preparing court documents, and assisting with trials and investigations.
It requires strong organizational skills and knowledge of legal procedures, especially in court-martial cases.
A good fit would be someone with prior experience in legal support, attention to detail, and the ability to handle sensitive information in a fast-paced government environment.
You will serve as a PARALEGAL SPECIALIST in the Office of Special Trial Counsel of NLSC.
GS-11 Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) General office management and administration; ensuring timely, accurate preparation and submission of correspondence and reports, and proper maintenance of files; 2) Assisting attorneys in their conducting of training to assigned military and civilian support staff on topics such as local law, court procedures, legal research, documentation preparation, case management and office procedures; 3) Onboarding all newly reporting trial staff, ensuring access to all files, directories and distribution lists; 4) Delivering formal or informal presentations/training regarding legal or administrative procedures to appropriate audiences outside of trial department; 5) Verifying accurate data entry and document upload into applicable case management systems.
6) Performing routine quality review to verify compliance with policy and standards; 7) Reviewing court-martial docket and updating attorneys on case deadlines.
GS-12 Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Preparing litigation and court-martial support documents (e.g.
pleadings, motions, Article 62 appeals, direct and cross examination questions) requiring complex independent legal research, analysis, and factual understanding of specific cases; 2) Preparing assigned cases in accordance with applicable laws, rules, regulations, precedents, policies, office practices and established procedures.
3) Logging and managing discovery and fully understands trial counsel discovery obligations; 4) Proofing charge sheets, written requests, court-martial filings, and correspondence to ensure correct assembly, format, and grammar; 5) Examining correspondence, pleadings and other legal documents to verify factual and legal content; (6) Reviewing accused, victim, and witness service records for relevance and completeness; (7) Evaluating correspondence, case files, pleadings or other legal documents to determine sufficiency of materials and to identify needed actions.
8) Interviewing victims and witnesses to obtain and verify information and prepare for trial; 9) Conducting investigation and information gathering to determine pertinent facts; 10) Accompanying attorneys during hearings and litigation and assists in the organization of witness testimony, presentation of evidence, and required research.
