If you are a current AGO legal support professional looking for a career growth and development opportunity within a supportive, collaborative environment where you can continue contributing meaningfully to Washington State’s legal matters, we invite you to consider our 12-month in-training program from Legal Assistant 2 to Paralegal 1.
This full-time, permanent position includes a two-tier, in-training program.
The selected candidate will start at the Legal Assistant 2 classification, promote to Legal Assistant 3, and promote again to Paralegal 1 upon successful completion of the in-training program curriculum.
The position is based in Tumwater, WA with our Labor and Industries Division.

The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
Promotional salaries at each stage will be based on Article 42.9 of the WFSE CBA for represented employees and the AGO Salary Determination Policy for non-represented employees.

In-Training Program Details
The AGO Professional Staff In-Training program is a formal on-the-job training program. The program enables the AGO to use defined training steps to train employees to work toward successfully performing the duties and responsibilities of the goal class.
In this job posting, we are considering internal AGO LA1 staff who hold permanent status as an LA1 only and are interested in learning on-the-job with the goal of moving into the Paralegal 1 role.
You’ll gain the competencies and skills needed to successfully perform your duties while being supported by your supervisor, manager, and coworkers.
Upon successful completion of your training and demonstrating knowledge of the position requirements, you will be promoted into the Paralegal 1 level.

Specific to the Labor and Industries Division in Tumwater, WA – The Labor & Industries (L&I) Division is comprised of 50 attorneys and 71 professional staff between Tumwater and Seattle.
The Tumwater Division also provides litigation support to even more attorneys and staff in the seven Regional Service Offices.
There is someone handling L&I litigation at every AGO location in the state, but the Division has primary responsibility for assigning cases and providing advice to the Department.
The L&I Division represents and advises the Department regarding the state’s industrial insurance program, workers’ compensation benefits, questions about fair wages and prevailing wage requirements, workplace conditions, and safe work environments, contractor and building issues, crime victim claims and other issues for workers and employers.
The division handles a wide variety of cases from entry level to highly complex matters, and has a robust appellate litigation program.
The work touches all businesses and workers in Washington and is of central importance to the business economy of our state.
Our attorneys defend L&I orders before the Board of Industrial Insurance appeals, Office of Administrative Hearings and state courts.
These cases involve, but are not limited to injured worker’s seeking benefits; worker fraud; employer premiums; penalties assessed for violations of WISHA standards; industrial insurance discrimination; WISHA discrimination; contractor, plumbing and electrical citations; wage and hour citations, prevailing wage citations, employment standards, elevator citations/standards; apprenticeship programs, as well as provide client advice on these matters.
