Summary

This temporary night-shift job involves painting walls, doors, moldings, and other surfaces in the historic buildings of the U.S.

Full Job Description

The position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, OFC O/T Chief Engineer, Construction Management Division, Construction Execution Branch.

The incumbent is a Painter with responsibility for panting doors, moldings and walls involving hallways, meeting rooms, bathrooms, offices and other special purpose rooms in the Capitol Complex.

Must be able to perform journey-level painting work in a historically significant environment requiring meticulous attention to detail You must meet all eligibility and qualification requirements by the closing date of the job announcement.

You must meet the following SCREEN-OUT(S) required for this position. Ability to do the Work Without More than Normal Supervision Major Duties:

***This appointment is temporary, not to exceed 13 months. It is a position that is subject to the project needs of the agency.

Therefore, the appointment could be terminated at any time due to shortage of work or shortage of funds.

If project work continues, however, it could be extended beyond the 13 months time frame at the sole discretion of the agency*** Night Position: 7:00 pm - 5:00 am Monday thru Thursday ***Hours may change due to Operational Needs of Management It is Desirable that the applicant have at least 5 years of recent/active painting experience that can be verifiable.

The selectee must have JOURNEY LEVEL EXPERIENCE in the Painting Occupational Field and duties must be reflected in the work history of the resume.

DUTIES: PAINTING Performs standard coating work using any of the accepted methods of the trade such as rolling or spraying paint products.

Matches colors and density requirements for the project being performed.

In addition to conventional painting treatments of multiple surfaces, such as walls, hallways and bathrooms, applies some decorative painting techniques to historical Committee Hearing Rooms as part of a team.

Applies primers or sealers to prepare new surfaces, such as bare wood or metal, for finish coats.

Applies paint, stain, varnish, enamel, and other finishes to equipment, buildings, decorative walls and doors and/or other structures, using brushes, spray guns, or rollers.

Polishes final coats to specified finishes. May work on site or in a paint booth located in a shop.

PAINTING PREPARATION Removes fixtures such as pictures, door knobs, lamps, and electric switch covers prior to painting. Protects floors and furnishings from damage during the painting project.

Prepares interior and exterior metal, wood and masonry surfaces. This includes removing old finishes using chemicals, scraping, and sandpapering. May plaster or spackle small holes and cracks.

Mixes and prepares paints, stains and other products. Fills cracks, holes, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives.

Calculates amounts of required materials and paint, based on surface measurements. Covers surfaces with drop cloths or masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.

Removes old finishes by stripping, sanding, wire brushing, or using water and/or abrasive blasting. Smoothes surfaces, using sandpaper, scrapers, brushes, steel wool, and/or sanding machines.

Washes and treats surfaces with oil, turpentine, mildew remover, or other preparations, and sands rough spots to ensure that finishes will adhere properly.

Uses standard tools and equipment such as scrapers, putty knives, wire brushes, sandpaper, trowels, screeds, straight edges, viscosity testers, and thickness gauges.

Performs refinishing work or assists sandblasters in preparing surfaces. Erects and dismantles staging and scaffolding.

May erect scaffolding, area work platforms, or set up ladders, to work above ground level. Waterproofs buildings, using water-proofers and caulking as required.

Complies with OSHA regulations and trade safety practices. Performs other related duties as assigned.
