Job Description

Summary

This job involves working in the FBI's operations center, where you'll handle incoming calls and information during emergencies and routine situations, analyze data to create reports, and communicate effectively with the public and law enforcement to ensure quick responses.

It's ideal for someone with strong communication skills, the ability to stay calm under pressure, and experience in data analysis or customer service in high-stakes environments.

You'll be a key support role in keeping operations running smoothly during critical events.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-6, including evaluating data significance, validity, and reliability for reports
  • Experience analyzing, evaluating, and disseminating information, especially in emergency contexts
  • Strong oral communication skills for gathering information and providing guidance to customers in emergency and non-emergency situations
  • Ability to maintain contact with internal staff and external entities to obtain, verify, and convey information
  • Proficiency in conducting searches on multiple databases and systems to locate and analyze data
  • Skills in crisis intervention and handling difficult conversations telephonically or face-to-face with the public
  • Experience collaborating with local, state, and federal law enforcement for emergency responses (for GS-8 level)

Full Job Description

At the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Operations Center Technicians (OCTs) apply their communication and technological skills to gather and prioritize information as it relates to emergency and non-emergency situations.

OCTs serve as key members of the FBI's Field Office Operations Centers and provide data collection support and critical communication during high-risk situations.

GS-7: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-6 grade level.

SE is defined as follows: Evaluated the significance, validity, and reliability of data for inclusion in reports. Analyzed, evaluated, and disseminated information.

Orally communicated with customers to gather pertinent information and provide guidance on emergency and non-emergency situations.

Maintained contact with internal staff and outside entities to obtain, verify, and convey information. GS-8: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-7 grade level.

SE is defined as follows: Evaluated the significance, validity, and reliability of data for inclusion in detailed written reports.

Analyzed, evaluated, and disseminated information pertaining to emergencies.

Orally communicated with customers to gather pertinent information and provide guidance on emergency and non-emergency situations.

Collaborated with local, state, and/or federal law enforcement agencies in order to ensure an appropriate response to emergency situations. Major Duties:

Conducts complicated searches on multiple databases and systems to locate data and analyze information.

Determines the significance, validity, and reliability of data and produces written reports for use within the FBI.

Utilizes the appropriate methods and techniques to handle difficult conversations telephonically and face to face with the public.

Prioritizes all incoming emergency and non-emergency communications identifying the appropriate level of response, determining other critical information, and notifying respondents accordingly.

Maintains constant communication with the on-scene point of contact for an emergency for the duration of the event or until authority is transferred to the appropriate officials.

Performs crisis intervention with distraught emergency callers during high-risk situations until appropriate emergency field units arrive on scene.
