About the Position: This position is within the DIR of Nursing Operating Room at the Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

This is a Direct Hire Solicitation Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Basic Requirements for Operating Room Nursing Assistant GS-06: Experience required for GS-06: To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job.

Specialized experience is defined as: organizing equipment for surgical procedures; assisting surgical team during surgery; and perform post-operative cleaning or stocking of the operating room.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Nursing or a related field of study.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9.

Add the two percentages. Major Duties:

  • Perform surgical technician duties in support of the Operating Room Service by providing support for surgical procedures ranging from routine (e.g., appendectomy, myringotomy, herniorrhaphy, etc.) to complex, to high risk.
  • Select, assemble, and organize required supplies, equipment, and instruments for specific surgical procedure in accordance with operative work sheets, physician preference cards and/or conferring with physicians or charge nurse.
  • Obtain sterile supplies, sutures, dressings, linens, etc., for specific procedures.
  • Open instrument sets, pour solutions, set up and adjust equipment such as electric coagulator, electric bone saw, operating microscope, air power drills, defibrillators, and resuscitators.
  • Clean operating room after surgery, remove and dispose of soiled and/or contaminated materials.
  • Select appropriate methods for sterilizing, balancing time constraints with possible detrimental effects of quicker methods.
  • Orient and train newly assigned personnel and students.
  • Give and receive in-service training in new technology, equipment, instruments, and new techniques.
