Summary

This job involves assisting surgeons and medical teams in the operating room at a military hospital in North Carolina, helping prepare patients for surgery, handing over tools during procedures, and ensuring everything runs smoothly to support complex operations.

It's a hands-on role that requires staying calm under pressure and working closely with doctors and nurses.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience in preparing patients for surgery, maintaining equipment, and assisting surgical teams, or equivalent education in practical nursing or operating room technology
  • Successful completion of a 2-year degree program in a relevant field such as practical nursing, psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technician (or combination of education and experience totaling 100%)
  • Possess and maintain national certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or from the National Board on Certification in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTASA)
  • Ability to provide support in 14 surgical specialties, including mixing medications, handing instruments, and assisting with procedures like tissue retraction and wound closure
  • Skills in monitoring for surgical complications (e.g., hemorrhage, shock) and quickly supplying instruments, drugs, or supplies
  • Experience with postoperative care, such as securing dressings and coordinating with anesthesia for patient temperature control
  • Perform accurate counts of sponges, needles, and sharps during procedures

About the Position: This position is located at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation. A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized.

Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes preparing patients before and after surgery procedures; maintaining medical equipment/tools used during surgical procedures; and/or assisting surgical team during procedures.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR Education: Successful completion of a 2-year degree program in an accredited community college, junior college, or college or university in practical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for a psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technician.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60.

Add the two percentages.

The employee must also possess and maintain a national certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or National Board on Certification in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTASA).

Major Duties:

  • Provides surgical support of a highly specialized nature to patients undergoing surgery, including the newest and most complex, state-of-the-art procedures in fourteen (14) surgical specialties.
  • Mixes medications as required for use under the direction of nurse and/or surgeon.
  • Hands instruments to the surgeon during the procedure by anticipating the surgeon's needs while safely handling blades, needles, and other objects.
  • Assists surgeons during surgery with tissue retraction, insertion of tubes, intravenous lines, or closure of surgical wounds.
  • Maintains alertness for complications developing during surgery such as hemorrhage, shock and cardiac arrest and immediately supplies instruments, drugs, and supplies to correct the condition.
  • Assists with securing surgical dressings to the operative site postoperatively.
  • Coordinates with anesthesia personnel to maintain patient temperature.
  • Performs sponge, needle, and sharps count during various periods of all surgical procedures.
  • Maintains a national certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or National Board on Certification in Surgical technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTASA).
