In addition to maintaining over 20,000 lane miles of state highway and 4,100 bridges, WSDOT manages the world's longest floating bridge, leads an award-winning Active Transportation Plan, holds the record for the world’s widest tunneling project, and operates the largest ferry system in the nation!The OpportunityWSDOT is currently seeking an Office Support Engineer in Lacey, WA, to support the Olympic Region’s construction program through accurate and timely project reporting in the Capital Program Management System (CPMS).

Reporting to the Project Delivery and Reporting Supervisor, this position supports analysis of project budgets and schedules in accordance with WSDOT policy and helps sustain the agency’s credibility by ensuring project milestones, accomplishments, and changes are accurately documented and communicated.

This role contributes to effective project control, accountability, and management of change while supporting WSDOT’s strategic plan and goal areas through adherence to established quality, safety, and stewardship standards.

A strong candidate will be detail-oriented, analytical, and collaborative, with the ability to learn from past projects and clearly communicate complex project information.What to ExpectAmong the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Office Support Engineer will:

  • Assist with managing the Capital Improvement and Preservation Program by tracking project cash flow and documenting changes that impact budgets.
  • Maintain accurate project data in computerized systems, ensuring delivery plans, spending plans, and project milestones are up to date.
  • Support project setup in the Capital System, monitor authorizations and expenditures, and track project development and aging.
  • Prepare work orders using the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) Portal and update project files and schedules to reflect cash flow needs.
  • Prepare change management updates for the Transportation Executive Information System (TEIS).
  • Use WSDOT reporting systems, established procedures, and computer applications to complete assigned tasks.
  • Support monthly communication with Project Offices regarding changes in scope, schedules, or budgets, and help coordinate meetings with Program Management and other support offices.
  • Provide customer service and general office or field support, including assisting with database issues or work order requests.


Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Transportation Project Management: Demonstrated ability to manage transportation project scopes, schedules, and funding, including planning, tracking, and monitoring project activities using Capital Project Management and enterprise accounting systems within a professional work environment.
  • Independent and Team-Based Performance: Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team to complete assigned tasks, meet deadlines, and contribute to shared objectives with minimal supervision.
  • Workload and Priority Management: Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks in a high-production environment, adapt to frequently changing priorities, and maintain accuracy, organization, and timeliness.
  • Interpersonal and Collaborative Effectiveness: Strong interpersonal skills demonstrated through the ability to work effectively with project offices, team members, and support offices, fostering productive working relationships and coordinated outcomes.
  • Communication: Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively with diverse audiences, both orally and in writing, including the ability to convey technical or project-related information in a professional and understandable manner.
  • Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Demonstrated research and analytical skills to examine issues, evaluate options, and propose alternative solutions while maintaining strong attention to detail and sound judgment.
  • Technical and Administrative Proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, to prepare professional correspondence, documentation, and reports.
  • Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
  • Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Engineering or Transportation Background: Demonstrated knowledge of engineering, transportation, or a closely related field, gained through education or practical application, that supports understanding of transportation projects and related work.
  • Project Management and Financial Systems Familiarity: Demonstrated familiarity with project management, tracking, and financial systems used in transportation environments, such as the Capital System, Work Order Authorization system, Transportation Executive Information System (TEIS), Transportation Reporting and Accounting Information System (TRAINS), and exposure to the biennial budget development process.
  • Project Development or Construction Environment Exposure: Demonstrated exposure to or experience working within a Project Development and/or Construction environment, including an understanding of project workflows, coordination efforts, and the relationship between planning, design, and construction activities.
