About the Position: This position is located in a hospital or clinic setting and is responsible for use multiple office automation software with varied functions to produce a wide range of documents to provide miscellaneous clerical support at Naval Medical Center Dir of Surgery, Portsmouth, VA.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes receiving calls and greeting visitors, writing and reviewing reports for correct grammar, organizing and filing documents, and using a computer for general office automation.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60.

Add the two percentages. Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5-minute sample with three or fewer errors.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-04).

Major Duties:

  • Use word processing software to create, copy, edit, store, retrieve, and print forms, memos, and letters and lengthy reports.
  • Assist in developing look and format of reports and in identifying and solving problems in existing methods or procedures.
  • Create elementary macros to simplify and expedite assignments and provide instructions on their use to others in the office.
  • Prepare a wide variety of recurring and nonrecurring correspondence, reports, and other documents.
  • Proofread correspondence and documents for correct grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and format.
  • Make travel arrangements in accordance with appropriate travel regulations.
  • Prepare time and attendance records.
