Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as an occupational or physical therapist to help children with physical disabilities by evaluating their needs, creating treatment plans, and teaching them and their families how to use mobility aids and equipment.

It's a flexible role in public health, either full-time or part-time extra-help up to 25 hours per week, focused on serving kids through California's children services program.

A good fit would be a licensed or soon-to-be-licensed therapist who enjoys working with children, families, and teams in a community health setting.

Key Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited occupational or physical therapy program approved for California licensure
  • Possession of a valid California license as an Occupational or Physical Therapist (required for Level II; Level I allows supervised practice with acknowledgment from the state)
  • For Level II: One full year of professional experience as an Occupational or Physical Therapist
  • Ability to evaluate patients, develop and adjust treatment plans, and observe reactions to therapy
  • Skills in instructing patients, families, and aides on using wheelchairs, crutches, braces, and other devices
  • Physical ability to lift and move objects over 75 pounds (with help), with frequent reaching, pushing, and hand-eye coordination
  • Effective communication, data analysis, and maintaining confidentiality under stressful conditions

Full Job Description

This recruitment is being established to obtain a current eligible list for both full time and Extra-Help vacancies. Extra-Help are not entitled to county benefits and are limited to a maximum of 25 hours per week. Extra-Help pay is $45.06 - $49.68 per hour.

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:


  • Interviews patients and evaluates their physical condition.
  • Provides a full range of occupational or physical therapy for neuromuscularly, orthopedically and physically disabled children that may require highly specialized skills and knowledge.
  • Reviews clinical records, medical prescriptions and physician referrals to develop treatment plans.

  • Observes patient reactions and notes changes; adopts and applies treatment procedures.
  • Instructs aides, assistants, family members and patients in the proper use of wheelchairs, crutches, canes, braces, prosthetic appliances and devices; devises or adapts equipment as required.
  • May consult with school staff, medical personnel and vendors for coordination of services.
  • May be assigned to any California Children Services site in the County.
  • May provide Targeted Case Management services and engage in outreach and other activities to enhance services to Medi-Cal beneficiaries.

Requirements

Level I:

Education:
Graduation from an approved college or university educational program for Occupational or Physical Therapy which meets the requirements for licensure as an Occupational or Physical Therapist in the State of California.

OR

*Written acknowledgment from the State of California Occupational or Physical Therapy Examining Committee allowing the practice of Occupational or Physical Therapy under direct supervision of a California Licensed Occupational or Physical Therapist.

OR

Possession of a valid license as an Occupational or Physical Therapist issued by the State of California.

*Note: Failure to become licensed in California as an Occupational or Physical Therapist within one year of appointment will result in termination of employment.

Level II:

Experience:
One (1) full year of experience as a Professional Occupational or Physical Therapist.

License:
Possession of a valid license as an Occupational or Physical Therapist issued by the State of California.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Frequent use of hand-eye coordination.
  • Normal dexterity, frequent holding and grasping.

  • Regular attendance is an essential function.

Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of occupational or physical therapy; Kinesiology and Modalities.
  • Physiology, skeletal anatomy and pathology of disease.
  • Construction, use and care of orthopedic appliance and equipment.
  • Therapy methods and techniques requiring highly specialized skills and abilities.
  • Pathology of the physical disability as well as psychological and physiological implications.

Ability to:
  • Instruct patients, families and others in therapeutic exercise.
  • Teach handicapped persons and families fundamentals of functional and suitable activities.
  • Coordinate with other professional staff to secure carry-over in the treatment and training of patients.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Physically lift and move patients for treatment, positioning and exercise.
  • Develop therapeutic techniques and devices.
  • Establish effective work relationships with patients, family and others providing patient care.
  • Coordinate and employ several treatment approaches to accomplish complex treatment objectives.
  • Work with emotionally and physically handicapped individuals and their families.
  • Work with a high degree of independence.
