Requirements

The primary duty of this position is to perform plant collection, propagation, transplanting, pruning, spraying, fertilization, cultivation and maintenance of the campus arboretum nursery and plant collection; perform nursery operations and maintenance work as well as arboretum recordkeeping, documentation and labeling tasks; apply various chemicals to control insects and plant disease, and control weeds; and perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To qualify, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

Legal Authorization to Work:

The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.


Basic Requirement: Either experience (paid or unpaid), education, training, or any combination thereof, which demonstrates the ability to read and to comprehend and apply written and oral directions.

Specialized Experience: ONE YEAR of work experience which demonstrates knowledge of the following:
(A) methods of vegetative and seed plant propagation such as air-layering, grafting, budding, cuttage, seed storage, cross-pollination;
(B) application of insecticides, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides;
(C) the care and maintenance of plants;
(D) principles and practices of nursery work;
(E) identification, prevention, eradication, and control of plant diseases, weeds and insect pests; (F) soil conditions, characteristics and nutrients;
(G) equipment, materials and facilities used in nursery work;
(H) plants indigenous to the area;
(I) and ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to keep simple records.

Certification: Some positions may require applicants to obtain a certificate as a Commercial Applicator of Restricted Pesticides, Category 3 - Ornamental and Turf Pest Control, and obtain medical clearance, training, and fit-testing to use a respirator, within six months from the date of hire. The immediate vacancy has this requirement.

Driver's License: Some positions require possession of a valid driver's license at the time of appointment. The immediate vacancy has this requirement.
