Riverside University Health System (RUHS) Behavioral Health is seeking a dedicated Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to join its Correctional Health Services team.

The primary assignment for this position is at the Cois Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta, California; however, incumbents must be willing to work across multiple correctional facilities throughout the county, and travel between sites is required.

In this role, the incumbent will provide comprehensive behavioral health care to patient-inmates within secure county detention facilities, including conducting psychiatric evaluations, performing thorough behavioral health assessments, diagnosing and treating mental health conditions, managing and monitoring psychiatric medications, and responding to behavioral health crises with appropriate interventions.

The PMHNP will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team to support high-quality patient care within the correctional environment.

Candidates must be board certified as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and possess a valid California Driver’s License.

The ideal candidate will have experience in correctional health care and/or inpatient psychiatric settings, demonstrate strong diagnostic and clinical assessment skills, and be adept in crisis response, intervention, and suicide prevention.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working in secure, locked environments and demonstrate adaptability, professionalism, and sound clinical judgment in a correctional care setting.

Positions will be filled at either the NP I, NP II, or NP III level - dependent on years of work experience as an NP. Experienced NPs are preferred.

Requirements

• Take patient health histories; perform physical examinations; record findings and assess the health status of patients.

• Identify abnormalities and/or concerns in physical, mental, emotional, developmental, and psychosocial functioning; order, review and interpret diagnostic and screening procedures.

• Perform selected diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; follow orders for administering medications and therapeutic devises.

• Provide health counseling and educate patients on specific areas related to patient illness/health status.

• Refer patients for further diagnosis and/or treatment when indicated; identify patients who require immediate attention of a physician; initiate specified emergency treatment; carry out approved treatment plans.

• Initiate orders for medication and therapeutic devices to patients; may assist in orienting less experienced nurse practitioners.

• Provide input into clinical decision making via participation on committees as assigned; collaborate with other nurse practitioners and physicians to review protocols for healthcare.

Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor's or Master's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing, public health, health sciences or a closely related field.

Experience:
NP I - none; NP II - one year of experience as a Nurse Practitioner; NP III - three years as a Nurse Practitioner with at least one year in a comparable healthcare setting to the assignment.

Knowledge of: Techniques used in the diagnosis and treatment of personal health problems; principles of health maintenance and disease management; psychosocial assessment; normal growth and development; pathophysiology; pharmacology; nutrition; counseling and health education principles; healthcare delivery systems; community resources and referrals systems related to healthcare; legal implications of advance practice roles in nursing; principles of quality assurance.

Ability to: Provide care to patients with acute and chronic health problems; collaborate with healthcare team, patients and families to identify and resolve health problems; write clear, concise documentation of patient visits in the medical record; provide independent nursing care; function under standardized protocols; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, healthcare team and others; analyze situations accurately and take effective courses of action.

License/Certificate: Must possess and maintain a current valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.

Possession of a certificate authorizing practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of California.

Possession of a valid license to furnish medications as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of California.

Current certification as a Nurse Practitioner in a field of specialty by a recognized National Board is required.

Possession of a current Basic Life Support (BLS) may be required.
