Summary

This entry-level Nurse Practitioner role with the City of El Paso's Public Health Department involves providing preventive medical care, conducting patient assessments, prescribing treatments, and collaborating with other health professionals in clinics and health centers.

A good fit would be a newly licensed nurse practitioner with some nursing experience who enjoys direct patient interaction, record-keeping, and possibly supervising small teams in a community health setting.

Key Requirements

  • Licensed as a Nurse Practitioner or Family Nurse Practitioner in Texas or an NLC state

MOS Code: 1976 (Navy), 66P (Army), 46Y1H, (Air Force)

Education and Experience: Licensed to practice as Nurse Practitioner or Family Nurse Practitioner in the State of Texas by the State Board of Nurse Examiners or equivalent from a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state and two (2) years' nursing experience.

Licenses and Certificates: Must have prescriptive authority. Texas Class "C" Driver's License or equivalent from another state.

Requirements

Under general direction, provide preventative medical care and treatment to patients in clinics and health centers.

Qualifications

Assess patients’ physical health status, perform prescribed physical examinations and preventive health treatments. Involves: Interview patients to obtain medical history and identify patients' health status. Request, interpret and evaluate diagnostic tests to identify and assess patients’ clinical problems and health care needs.  Interpret health assessment information to formulate and implement health care plans according to established policies.  Prescribe and dispense prescription and non-prescription drugs as needed, based on documented information and symptoms. Support health programs in providing patient care along with social workers, nutritionists, and nursing staff and other paraprofessional personnel from other disciplines. Maintain records and prepare oral and written reports in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. Maintain professional licensure and keep up-to-date with recent medical developments. Manage patient records and ensure daily care program needs are met. 
 
May supervise assigned staff. Involves: Schedule, assign, instruct, guide and check work. Appraise employee performance. Provide for training and development. Enforce personnel rules and regulations and work behavior standards firmly and impartially. Counsel, motivate and maintain harmony. Recommend hiring, termination, discipline, or other employee status changes.
