Full Job Description

Join one of the 24 Institutes and Centers within the NIH that provides professional Nursing.

As a Nurse you will serve as the primary nurse or coordinator of care for a specific population of patients; initiate appropriate referrals and coordinate routine care; and assess complex and sensitive health education needs in individual patient populations with like conditions, protocols and other characteristics.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Completion of a Graduate or higher-level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required.

This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S.

Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

OR Completion of a Degree from a Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (external link) is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS: You must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

AND You must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify for the GS-13 grade level: In addition to the education and license requirement, you must demonstrate in your resume at least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: Providing comprehensive nursing care, preventative, and therapeutic health care services to patients and family members within clinical research environments.

Experience planning, designing, and/or developing clinical research protocols; implementing treatment and research plans; managing research data collection protocols; and evaluating trends in research study outcomes and protocol compliance.

Positions will be filled in one or more of the following specialties: Lead Nurse (Clinical Research), Nurse (Clinical Research), Nurse (Consultant), Nurse (Educator), Nurse (Research Specialist), Nurse (Specialist) and Nurse.

The incumbent will perform duties such as the following for each applicable specialty area for the position in which selected: Lead Nurse (Clinical Research) As a Lead Nurse for Clinical Research, you will provide leadership and operational oversight for nursing activities within research protocols.

You will guide clinical research teams, ensure the integrity of study execution, and serve as the primary nursing point of contact for principal investigators and study sponsors, combining advanced clinical practice with expert management of research compliance and team coordination.

Nurse (Clinical Research) As a Clinical Research Nurse, you will expertly utilize the nursing process to assess, plan, and evaluate patient care for specific cohorts participating in biomedical research.

Your duties will include coordinating internal and external referrals to manage multidisciplinary care and assessing complex health education needs for patient populations with similar conditions or protocols.

Nurse (Consultant) As a Nurse Consultant, you will provide leadership, direction, and technical support to executive, management, and clinical staff.

Your expertise will guide the planning, development, and evaluation of information systems, research studies, and monitoring projects to assure the delivery of consistently high-quality nursing care.

Nurse (Educator) As a Clinical Educator, you will be responsible for educating staff on new equipment and coordinating in-service training and product demonstrations.

You will design, implement, and evaluate learning experiences for all staff levels to increase their competence and develop creative teaching plans for research participants and their families that serve as a standard for broader use.

Nurse (Research Specialist) As a Research Specialist, you will provide comprehensive nursing, preventative, and therapeutic health care services to patients and their families within a clinical research environment.

A key function of this role is to coordinate and manage patient populations participating in research studies while assessing their complex and sensitive health education needs.

Nurse (Specialist) As a Nurse Specialist, you will serve as the clinical expert for nursing practice within a specific specialty area, organizing care delivery in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team to promote continuity and accountability.

You will be responsible for identifying the nursing scope of practice and using expert consultative skills to establish therapeutic relationships and recommend solutions to clinical challenges.
