Job Description

Summary

This job involves helping families in Muskegon County apply for and receive public assistance benefits, assessing their needs, and connecting them to resources to achieve self-sufficiency.

Workers guide families toward independence while explaining program expectations from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

It's a great fit for empathetic individuals with strong communication skills who enjoy supporting community members through challenging times.

Key Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education
  • Experience in social services, casework, or public assistance programs
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for client interactions
  • Ability to assess family needs and make appropriate referrals
  • Knowledge of Michigan public assistance policies and procedures
  • Proficiency in computer systems for eligibility processing
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in service delivery

Full Job Description

The role of the Eligibility Specialist is to strengthen Michigan families by:

  • Ensuring that each person/family that applies for public assistance receives the type and level of assistance that they are eligible for
  • Assessing the needs of each person/family and giving them appropriate information and making any referrals and/or contacts to persons/agencies to help them meet their needs.
  • Providing all families with information about the expectations and goals of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS).
  • Encouraging and guiding families in their efforts to become self supporting.
