Full Job Description

You will serve as a Motor Vehicle Operator in the NAVAL SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT ACTIVITY. This position is in the excepted service and does not confer competitive status.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job.

Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: the ability and experience performing the full range of tasks including: 1) Operating and performing operator maintenance on straight trucks which have an approximate gross weight over 32,000 pounds, tractors, and semi-trailers; 2) Determining the correct turning radius for vehicles with flexion type; 3) Returning a trailer to loading docks, between other vehicles, and in narrow/congested locations near warehouses and parking lots; and 4) Loading, arranging, and securing cargo in trailers to ensure trailers do not become overloaded or unevenly loaded.

I work on my own initiative under general supervision subject to occasional inspection.

  • You will safely operate straight-in-line trucks, which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of more than 32,000 pounds, including truck tractors and semi-trailers.
  • You will operate vehicles that are equipped with air brakes and electrical lines, have more than one body and two braking systems, and may be oversized.
  • You will perform operator maintenance on all vehicles operated, e.g., monitoring fluid levels, replacing air filters and interior lights, checking tire pressure and hose connections.)
  • You will work on a team of qualified individuals while ensuring the job performed is completed in a professional, competent, safe and secure manner.
  • You will operate vehicles over federal, state, county and city streets and roads in all traffic conditions.
  • You will use computer applications and electronic tracking systems.
