Job Description

Summary

This job involves testing samples from people, animals, and the environment to detect harmful bacteria like those causing tuberculosis and certain fungi, using lab techniques to identify and fight these microbes.

It also includes maintaining equipment, safely handling dangerous pathogens, and performing advanced genetic analysis.

A good fit would be someone with a science background who enjoys detailed lab work and has experience in microbiology, especially with infectious diseases.

Key Requirements

  • Possession of a bachelor's degree in microbiology or a related field
  • For Microbiologist 9: No specific professional experience required
  • For Microbiologist 10: One year of professional experience in microbiology activities equivalent to Microbiologist 9, such as diagnosing human disease or testing biological products
  • For Microbiologist P11: Two years of professional experience in microbiology activities equivalent to Microbiologist 9
  • Ability to perform diagnostic testing including specimen processing, microscopic examination, culture testing, identification, and susceptibility testing
  • Skills in molecular techniques like real-time PCR, DNA extraction, and Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS)
  • Proficiency in handling dangerous pathogens, chemicals, and maintaining lab instrumentation

This position performs diagnostic testing of human, animal, and environmental specimens for the presence of Mycobacteria and fungi.

This includes mycobacterial specimen processing, microscopic examination and culture testing of processed specimen material, as well as identification and susceptibility testing of culture isolates.

Identification testing includes staining, biochemical testing, real time PCR, and other molecular testing.

This position performs tasks including handling of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates, performing DNA extractions, and highly complex Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS).

This position is responsible for maintenance of instrumentation, autoclaving, and proper handling dangerous pathogens and chemicals.

    Requirements

    Education
    Possession of a bachelor's degree in microbiology or a related field.

    Experience

    Microbiologist 9
    No specific type or amount is required.

    Microbiologist 10
    One year of professional experience in carrying out microbiology activities to diagnose human disease, determine food purity, or produce and test biological products equivalent to a Microbiologist 9.

    Microbiologist P11
    Two years of professional experience in carrying out microbiology activities to diagnose human disease, determine food purity, or produce and test biological products equivalent to a Microbiologist, including one year equivalent to a Microbiologist 10.

    Additional Information

    The preferred and appointed candidate will be subject to pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty and follow-up drug and/or alcohol testing.



    Position Location: The physical location of this position is 3350 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Lansing, MI.

    Employees will be provided computers to perform state work. Phones may also be provided for necessary communications. If working remotely, employees will be responsible for providing other components of a remote office at their own expense, including:

    • A secure work location that allows privacy and prevents distractions.
    • A high-speed internet connection of at least 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload.
    • Suitable lighting, furniture, and utilities.
