Summary

This job involves testing water and wastewater samples in a lab to detect bacteria, plankton, and harmful organisms that affect the environment, especially during seasons with algal blooms.

You'll prepare samples, run specific analyses, and enter data to support environmental protection efforts in Pennsylvania.

  • Proficiency in lab methodologies including chromogenic and fluorogenic enzyme substrate assays, membrane filtration, heterotrophic plate count, and microscopic examination
  • Skills in data entry and supporting tasks in a biological services section
  • Full-time, on-site work schedule from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday, with no telework option

Requirements

In this role, you will be responsible for preparing samples for analytical purposes. Your duties will encompass receiving and logging samples, preparing them for analysis, and executing specialized processes for concentration, isolation, and purification in accordance with established protocols. Additionally, you will conduct analyses on water and wastewater to detect sanitary indicator bacteria, plankton, and pathogenic protozoans, while also managing data entry and supporting various tasks within the Biological Services Section.

You will analyze environmental water samples, including both water and wastewater, to assist with the section's workload throughout the harmful algal bloom season. The analytical tasks may involve methodologies such as chromogenic and fluorogenic enzyme substrate assays, membrane filtration, heterotrophic plate count, and microscopic examination of bacterial colonies and harmful algae.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Limited term, full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in microbiology; or
  • A bachelor’s degree that includes 20 credits in microbiology, cellular biology, molecular biology or bacteriology and 12 credits in chemistry or biochemistry.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree/credits.
