Job Description
Summary
This job involves supporting inmates with mental health issues in a prison setting by helping with daily supervision, group activities, and security tasks like escorts and cell checks.
It combines elements of counseling and corrections work to create a positive environment for those in need.
A good fit would be someone with a background in human services or criminal justice who is patient, organized, and comfortable in a structured, high-security environment.
Key Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a human services or criminal justice field
- High school diploma with relevant experience (bachelor's may substitute for experience)
- Ability to complete 8 weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire
- Experience or knowledge in mental health support and inmate management
- Skills in documentation and preparing reports per guidelines
- Capability to conduct psychoeducational groups and pro-social activities
Full Job Description
Under general supervision of the Major or designee,
- Will assist with the management of inmates with mental health concerns in restrictive housing and general population.
- Works closely with mental health and security staff in performing day to day escort and group activities to include a hybrid of security and clinical duties.
- Documents and prepares written reports in accordance with mental health and security guidelines.
- Assist with supervision of inmates by establishing a supportive environment promoting core SCDC values to inmates with mental health needs.
- Under guidance of QMHP conducts psychoeducational groups and other pro-social activities that qualify as out of cell structured time.
- Assist with custody related duties, escorting, supervision of recreation & showers, cell checks, suicide watch/constant observation for inmates in inpatient settings, residential mental health housing units, restrictive housing & general population.
Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements
State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
