Job Description
Summary
This job involves working as a therapist on a 24/7 mobile crisis team, responding to mental health emergencies by phone, in homes, or via telehealth to assess needs, ensure safety, and connect people to resources.
It's ideal for someone passionate about helping diverse communities during tough times, who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is comfortable with irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
The role is temporary for up to two years and focuses on real-time decision-making rather than long-term caseloads.
Key Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, or related field (Master's preferred for senior classification)
- Valid licensure as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Minnesota
- Experience conducting mental health assessments and crisis interventions for adults, children, and families
- Ability to work flexible shifts including nights, weekends, overnights, and 3 holidays per year (24-32 hours per two-week period)
- Proficiency in completing mental status exams, provisional diagnoses, safety planning, and documentation in electronic health records
- Residency in Minnesota or Wisconsin (must relocate if necessary)
- Strong skills in managing adult protection reports and collaborating in a team-based, hybrid (on-site and remote) setting
Full Job Description
Hennepin County's Human Services Public Health (HSPH) is seeking three Mental Health Crisis Therapists to join the Cope team. These positions provide one the opportunity to make a difference in diverse communities, enhance clinical skills in a fast-paced, team environment, and be part of a department with the mission to strengthen communities by improving the health of individuals and families.Cope is a 24/7 mobile crisis program that provides crisis services in Hennepin County. Community members call Cope when they or loved ones are having a difficult time managing a crisis and/or are seeking community supports. As a team member, you will make decisions about an individual's safety in real time while assessing their strengths. Instead of managing a caseload, you will be providing clients with reassurance in times of crisis, determining their needs and resources, and safety planning. It takes passion and a willingness to work with people in crisis.

Location and hours:
These positions are hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the North Minneapolis Human Services Center at 1001 Plymouth Avenue North, Minneapolis, MN, 55411, and remote as job duties require. The Mental Health Mobile Crisis program operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Typical work hours will be three to four shifts (24 to 32 hours) per two-week pay period that begin after noon on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, and/or overnights, Sunday through Saturday. If there are not enough shifts available within these parameters, you may then be able to pick up additional shifts that are open. Work hours will also require you to work 3 holidays per year. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.
A shift differential of $1.50 per hour will be paid for nights and weekends.

These positions are limited duration (temporary), non-benefit earning positions expected to last up to 2 years.

In these positions, you will:
- Conduct initial mental health screening of adults, children, and adolescents in crisis via phone to determine client needs.
- Provide mobile crisis assessment for adults, adolescents, children, and/or families in a client’s home, community setting, or through telehealth.
- Complete mental status examinations, determine appropriate provisional diagnoses, and develop short-term treatment goals and intervention plans based on the individual's identified needs.
- Manage Adult Protection calls received from Minnesota Adult Abuse Reporting Center (MAARC) and reports received through the Social Services Information System (SSIS).
- Complete documentation in electronic medical record according to statute.
- Work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
- Collaborate and consult with other mental health professionals, case managers, and family members with the appropriate authorization.
Need to have:
- One of the following:
- Master's degree or higher in social work or closely related field with course work emphasis in areas such as social work methods, human growth and behavior, and principles of social welfare.
- Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, sociology, or human services, and at least 18 semester (27 quarter) credits of graduate work in the above areas, and three years or more of full-time supervised experience as a social worker.
- Licensed as a Graduate Social Worker by the Minnesota Board of Social Work.
- A valid driver's license, the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver permit, and daily access to reliable transportation sufficient to travel to a variety of Hennepin County sites and community locations, and to occasionally transport clients.
Nice to have:
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure in any of the following:
- Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC), Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC).
- Experience:
- Providing therapy or crisis services to adults, adolescents, children, and/or their families in their home or other community setting.
- Conducting mental health screenings.
- Handling mental health crises, including diagnosis and treatment of clients in crisis.
- Knowledge of:
- Crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.
- County and community resources.
- Cultural differences in beliefs and practices relating to mental health, treatment, family structure, and dynamics.
- Ability to:
- Function well in unpredictable and challenging situations calling for sensitivity, flexibility, resourcefulness, and independent judgment.
- Effectively interact with people from diverse backgrounds and/or historically underserved populations.
- Work well in a group setting.
- Effective therapeutic intervention skills.
