Job Description

Summary

This job involves helping people with serious mental health issues or substance use problems who are involved in the court system by creating personalized plans, connecting them to treatment and support services, and ensuring they follow court rules to stay stable and recover.

A good fit would be someone with a background in social work or counseling who is organized, empathetic, and comfortable working with teams that include judges, lawyers, and doctors.

The role requires regular check-ins with clients, including visits to their homes or hospitals, to provide guidance during tough times.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (no substitutions allowed)
  • At least 2 years of experience in behavioral health, social services, criminal justice, or a related area
  • Ability to conduct intake screenings and psychosocial assessments for program eligibility
  • Skills in developing individualized case plans addressing criminogenic needs, treatment goals, and court requirements
  • Experience monitoring compliance with court orders, such as treatment attendance and medication adherence

Full Job Description

The Mental Health Court Case Manager (ASO2) is a non-Civil Service position located within the Mental Health Court of General Sessions Court. This position provides comprehensive case management services to justice-involved individuals diagnosed with serious mental illness, substance use disorders, or co-occurring disorders. The Case Manager supports participants in meeting court requirements while promoting treatment engagement, stability, and recovery. The incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Works closely with Mental Health Court staff, including the Judge, Coordinator, Assistant District Attorney, Public Defender, and Probation.
  • Collaborates with licensed mental health professionals, psychiatrists, and treatment providers to coordinate care and monitor compliance with treatment plans.
  • Performs intake screenings and comprehensive psychosocial assessments of applicants to determine program eligibility.
  • Identifies criminogenic and non-criminogenic needs and develops individualized case plans aligned with treatment goals and court requirements.
  • Monitors participant compliance with court orders, including treatment attendance, medication adherence, housing stability, and supervision conditions.
  • Meets regularly with participants in person to provide support, accountability, and problem-solving assistance.
  • Makes referrals to community mental health agencies, substance use treatment providers, housing programs, benefits assistance, and other supportive services.
  • Coordinates with hospitals, crisis response teams, and inpatient or residential treatment facilities as needed.
  • Participates in case staffing and staffing preparation with the multidisciplinary Mental Health Court Treatment Team.
  • Provides weekly verbal and written progress reports to the Treatment Team regarding participant status, compliance, and treatment engagement.
  • Recommends therapeutic interventions, graduated sanctions, and incentives consistent with Mental Health Court policies and best practices.
  • Conducts community-based contacts, including home visits, hospital visits, and outreach to participants experiencing instability or crisis.
  • Serves as a liaison between participants, family members, treatment providers, and community agencies.
  • Maintains accurate and timely case records, including electronic and paper files, and enters data into required local and state databases.
  • Ensures compliance with confidentiality requirements, including HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, and court policies.
  • Maintains current knowledge of evidence-based practices in mental health supervision, trauma-informed care, and co-occurring disorder treatment.
  • Participates in ongoing training, including All Rise Best Practice Standards, mental health and substance use treatment modalities, crisis intervention, and relevant state and national trainings as required.
  • Facilitates psycho-educational and clinical groups geared toward recovery of substance use disorders, mental health disorders, and overall betterment of clientele.


Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s Degree and some (2 years) of experience in a behavioral health, social services, criminal justice, or related field.

Additional Information

  • Master's Degree
  • Experience working in Mental Health Courts, Recovery Courts, or other Problem-Solving/Treatment Courts
  • Experience working with adults diagnosed with serious mental illness and/or co-occurring substance use disorders
  • Strong familiarity with symptoms of mental health disorders and substance use disorders, as well as evidence-based practices to treat these illnesses
  • Knowledge of community mental health, housing, and social service resources available in Davidson County
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed and recovery-oriented approaches
  • Experience facilitating groups in a mental health setting
  • Bilingual
