About the Position: This position is located at Brooke Army Medical center in San Antonio, Texas. A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized.

Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service. Student Loan repayment may be authorized. Non-Federal work experience may be creditable for leave purposes.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing testing procedures in a clinical laboratory; calibrating or maintaining clinical laboratory instruments; and documenting results through clinical laboratory automated systems.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

OR Education: One full year (18 semester hours) of progressively higher level graduate education in a field directly related to the work of the position such as Medical Lab Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology.

(Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18.

Add the two percentages.

(Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) AND Certification Requirement: Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT); Medical Technologist (MT); or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS).

(Copy of certification must be submitted with application package.) Major Duties:

  • Perform a wide variety of clinical laboratory test procedures within the Microbiology section in the Department of Pathology and Area Laboratory Services (DPALS), a College of American Pathology (CAP) accredited full service laboratory.
  • Perform microbiology tests and examinations using both automated and manual techniques and involving the operation of machines, instruments and equipment common to the microbiology specialization.
  • Receive specimens from Specimen Processing, clinics, wards, Troop Medical Clinics (TMCs), and other DOD facilities.
  • Operation of instruments and equipment used in performing tests and examinations involve function verification checks, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and making fine and delicate adjustments when controls exceed defined tolerance limits.
  • Monitor inventory of consumable supplies, reagents and controls, allowing sufficient lead time to obtain additional supplies prior to exhausting stock.
  • Assist in training newly assigned civilian and military laboratory personnel in the performance of microbiology tasks and the related quality assurance, instrument maintenance and implications of various results.
  • Accept referrals of abnormal or unusual results or procedural observations from lower grade personnel.
