Job Description

Summary

This job involves working in a military hospital lab in Louisiana, where you'll run tests on patient samples, maintain lab equipment, and ensure everything meets quality standards.

It's a hands-on role supporting medical care for soldiers and families.

A good fit would be someone with lab experience or related education who is detail-oriented and comfortable with technical equipment.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience in a clinical lab, including complex testing, equipment maintenance/troubleshooting, and quality control procedures
  • OR one full year of graduate education in Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology
  • OR a combination of qualifying education and experience totaling at least 100%
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) from ASCP, AMT, or an equivalent board approved by OASD(HA)
  • Ability to operate semi-automated and automated lab equipment, perform calibrations, and conduct troubleshooting
  • Experience preparing blood components, such as splitting products for transfusions using sterile procedures
  • Familiarity with special coagulation testing, including mixing studies and bleeding times

About the Position: This position is with Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital located at Fort Johnson, Louisiana. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) performing complex testing in a clinical laboratory setting; 2) maintaining and/or troubleshooting equipment; AND 3) conducting quality control procedures.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18.

Add the two percentages. AND Certificate: This position has a selective placement factor which must be met prior to employment and for continued employment.

Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is required.

Major Duties:

  • Work under the general supervision of a Hospital Laboratory Supervisory Medical Technologist who provides initial guidance on areas of responsibility and priorities.
  • Operate complex semi automated and automated equipment and performs calibration procedures, periodic operator maintenance tasks, troubleshooting procedures to identify the cause of malfunctions.
  • Conduct necessary quality control procedures.
  • Prepare different blood components to include splitting products for neonate transfusions using sterile welding procedures into special syringe components bags.
  • Perform special coagulation testing including mixing studies and bleeding times.
