Key Requirements

  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) from ASCP, AMT, or comparable board approved by OASD(HA)

About the Position: This position is located at Fort Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation.

A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized. Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing laboratory tests and examinations (including but not limited to chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking).

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Microbiology, Chemistry, or Clinical Laboratory Science.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18.

Add the two percentages. AND Certification: This position has a selective placement factor which must be met prior to employment and for continued employment.

Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is required.

Major Duties:

  • Perform a wide variety of medical laboratory examinations and procedures.
  • Manage patient results status by verifying and certifying results input into laboratory computer system.
  • Perform a variety of tests for patients to include severely anemic, leukemia and oncology patients.
  • Utilize automated equipment to determine the biochemical characteristics of bacteria and fungi.
  • Operate automation systems to log and track blood donor units.
