About the Position: This position is with the Defense Health Agency at the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, at Fort Hood, Texas.

This is a Direct Hire Solicitation Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Basic Requirement for Medical Support Assistant (Office Automation): Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes receiving patients or visitors; and entering, manipulating, or retrieving data from an electronic system.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60.

Add the two percentages.

Proficiency requirement - Qualified Typist: In addition to meeting the experience and/or education requirements above, applicants for these positions must be able to type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.

Applicants may meet these requirements by passing the appropriate performance test, presenting a certificate of proficiency from a school or other organization authorized to issue such certificates by the Office of Personnel Management local office, or by self-certifying their proficiency.

Performance test results and certificates of proficiency are acceptable for 3 years. Major Duties:

  • Enter, manipulate, and/or retrieve information and data from automated systems.
  • Maintain and monitor patient appointment schedules for the clinic/practice, and coordinate and/or schedules patient appointments with other clinics or specialties.
  • Receive patients and visitors as the initial point of contact (in person and/or telephonically), monitor the messaging system at the clinic/practice level, and refer urgent messages for immediate action.
  • Maintain all patients' records, both electronic and paper, according to regulation ensuring each entry contains proper patient and health care provider identification.
  • Respond to emergency calls and notify emergency medical personnel by following clinic/practice communication procedures to include operating emergency phone lines, public announcements systems and emergency alarms.
