About the Position: This position is located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center with the Director of Surgery, Eye Institute in Bethesda, MD.

Parking at WRNMMC is limited, alternate means of commuting suggested.

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service which includes performing clerical duties such as monitoring, scheduling, and rescheduling patients for treatment; entering data into automated healthcare systems; initiating, assembling, or filing medical records; and directing patients and visitors on clinic policy and procedures.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60.

Add the two percentages. Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.

Major Duties:

  • Serve as the initial point of contact for Service members, beneficiaries, and visitors in person and by telephone within a Medical Treatment Facility (MTF).
  • Perform front desk and reception duties to ensure timely patient check-in, accurate intake, and efficient clinic flow.
  • Schedule, reschedule, and cancel outpatient appointments using MHS GENESIS and manual processes in accordance with DHA and clinic procedures.
  • Verify patient eligibility, TRICARE enrollment, and third-party billing information, as required.
  • Perform a full range of receptionist, clerical, and record keeping duties in support of inpatient and outpatient clinical operations.
  • Prepare routine correspondence and documentation using standard office automation tools.
  • Enter, retrieve, and update patient information across multiple MHS automated systems, ensuring accuracy and data integrity.
