The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid-Atlantic Care Network (VISN 6) Charles George VA Medical Center (VAMC) Community Care Service is seeking an Advanced Medical Support Assistant.
The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) performs clerical/administrative work supporting the care and treatment of Veterans in Community Care Service.
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency.
MSAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3.j. Experience and Education: Experience.
Six months experience of clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; OR, Education.
One year above high school; OR, Experience/Education Combination.
Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: In addition to meeting the basic requirements listed above, you must meet the grade requirements at the GS-5 level to qualify for this position.
GS-6 Medical Support Assistant (Advanced) Specialized Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level.
This includes but is not limited to; independently performs a full range of duties related to the delivery of healthcare services in an inpatient or outpatient setting; scheduling, canceling, re-scheduling patient appointments and/or consults; entering no-show information; monitoring appointment requests from multiple electronic sources; participating in huddles with other MSAs and/or clinic staff to determine the daily needs of the clinic, monitoring both inpatient and outpatient appointments in areas of responsibility; verifying and updating demographics and insurance information when patients check-in for appointments.
Coordinates administrative functions relating to emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals and determines appointment type based on the patient's eligibility status (i.e., TRICARE, sharing agreements, collaterals, research patient, VA employee, etc.).
In addition, you must have experience which demonstrates the following knowledge, skills and abilities: i.
Ability to collaborate and communicate with a wide range of medical clinicians across multiple disciplines (e.g.
medical doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, clinical pharmacists, and nursing staff ) to accomplish team goal setting to ensure medical care to patients is met.
ii. Ability to independently set priorities and organize work to meet deadlines, ensuring compliance with established processes, policies, and regulations. iii.
Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, electronically, by phone, in person, and in writing, with internal and external customers.
This may include preparing reports in various formats and presenting data to various organizational levels, as well as resolving patient concerns. iv.
Advanced knowledge of the technical health care process (including, but not limited to, scheduling across inter disciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community models and patient health care portals) as it relates to access to care.
v.
Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community operational activities that affect patient flow, and patient support care administrative functions to include, but not limited to appointment cycles, outside patient referrals, follow-up care, overbooking, provider availability, etc.
vi. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology due to the technical nature of language utilized by clinician. Preferred Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-06 Physical Requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. This is mostly a sedentary position.
There was be some light lifting up to 25lbs, bending, standing, stooping, walking. This position will require you to work in from of a computer screen for 90% of your day. Major Duties:
The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) is responsible for scheduling appointments, interpreting and verifying provider orders in accordance with VHA national scheduling guidelines.
Assignments at this level include, but are not limited: scheduling, canceling, re-scheduling patient's appointments and/or consults; verifying and updating demographics and insurance information; performing basic edibility, and preauthorization requirements for specific coverage Duties of the AMSA include but are not limited to: Verify and update demographics and insurance information Initiating and carrying out a variety of administrative and technical duties in support of the Office of Non-VA Care Coordination.
Provides administrative and logistical support such as the coordination of care between Asheville VAMC, 3 CBOC's and outside facilities, both VA and non-VA.
Uses a broad working knowledge of all Community Care programs and services and of the varying priorities and complexities of outside care for specialty services.
Perform general clerical duties such as typing, filing, and data entry. Ensure the transfer of medical records from and to Asheville VAMC and other facilities.
Order office supplies and necessary forms. Serve as a timekeeper as necessary.
Responsible for scheduling, canceling, re-scheduling patient's appointments and/or consults Serve as a key contact for Veterans, Veterans' families, and community providers for specialty services.
Provide information and assistance and act upon administrative matters in the Veterans' and Asheville VAMC's interest.
Handle administrative work associated with the authorization, obligation of funds, and processing consults for non-VA care at the expense of the VA.
Perform a variety of duties in support of data entry and collection for the unit.
Have considerable training and a broad working knowledge of the different and complex regulations that are applied to the various fee-based programs.
