Full Job Description

The Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center (VAMC) in Wichita, Kansas is currently recruiting for a Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing Advanced).

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Experience and/or Education (1) Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or (2) Education.

One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or (3) Experience/Education Combination.

Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. English Language Proficiency.

Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grandfather Provision.

A MEDICAL SUPPLY TECHNICIAN (STERIL PROCESSING ADVANCED) employed in VHA on the effective date of the qualification standard 05/28/2014 who did not meet all the basic requirements in this standard may not be promoted beyond the full performance level (GS-0622-06) or be newly placed in supervisory or managerial positions until meeting the full qualification requirements.

Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements as stated above, the GS-07 Medica; Supply Technician (Sterile Processing Advanced) must meet the following requirements: (a) Experience.

One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. (b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.

In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: 1. Detailed knowledge of complex surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings. 2.

Ability to assemble specialty operating room and clinic instrument sets. 3. In-depth knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment. 4.

Ability to communicate both orally and in writing in order to convey information and thoughts to others. (c) Assignment.

The Advanced MST assembles highly complex instrument sets including, but not limited to, open heart, major orthopedic total joint, cardiovascular, craniotomy and complex endoscopic instrumentation.

Processes all complex endoscopic instrumentation to include those medical devices used in the gastroenterology laboratory, bronchoscopy laboratory, urology and operating room.

Reviews manufacturer guidelines to ensure the correct methods and parameters are followed when cleaning, decontaminating and sterilizing RME.

Troubleshoots and analyzes mechanical failures and makes necessary adjustments to complex decontamination and sterilization equipment, as well as interprets alarm conditions which may occur while operating the equipment.

Informs management and healthcare staff when cleaning and processing standard operating procedures (SOPs) or instruction for use have been changed or updated to assure the changes have been validated to meet all guidelines.

Preferred Experience: Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and other software programs, including but not limited to, Censitrac and/or other instrument tracking software.

Physical Requirements: Physical aspects associated with work required of this assignment are typical for the occupation and would generally not require a pre-placement examination. Major Duties:

Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional The Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing Advanced) is responsible for assembling highly complex surgical instrument sets, including but not limited to open-heart, major orthopedic total joint, cardiovascular, craniotomy, and advanced endoscopic instrumentation.

The incumbent in this position processes complex endoscopic devices used in the gastroenterology lab, bronchoscopy lab, urology, and operating room.

They are also responsible for reviewing manufacturer guidelines to ensure all cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization procedures follow the correct methods and validated parameters.

Additional functions of this position include, but are not limited to: Troubleshooting and analyzing mechanical issues with decontamination and sterilization equipment, making necessary adjustments and interpreting alarm conditions during operation, Communicating updates or changes to standard operating procedures (SOPs) or instructions for use (IFUs) to management and clinical staff, ensuring compliance with all regulatory and manufacturer requirements, Ensuring all responsibilities are carried out in alignment with established quality and safety standards, Receiving contaminated critical and semi-critical reuseable medical equipment (RME) in the decontamination area and possibly receiving noncritical equipment in the decontamination area as well, Disassembling the RME and determining the correct cleaning method, Inspecting, assembling, and determining the correct method of packaging for sterilization, Performing and documenting daily operational checks and records for sterilization equipment.
