Full Job Description

The position located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Hampton VA Healthcare System, in the Sterile Processing Service (SPS), Hampton, VA.

Performs segments of work pertaining to the decontamination, sterilization and inspection of reusable medical device (RMD).Completes segments of work pertaining to the assembly of basic sets and trays for use in the medical center.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Experience and/or Education: (1) Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or (2) Education.

One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or (3) Experience/Education Combination.

Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. Certification.

None May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations: GS06: (Full Performance Level) (a) Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. (b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.

In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: 1. Knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings. 2.

Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination. 3.

Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures. 4. Knowledge of sterility principles in regards to instrumentation. 5.

Ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures. Preferred Experience: Sterile processing experience, current state drivers license.

The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of 6. Physical Requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019 Major Duties:

GS6: Full Performance Level: Operates equipment involved in sterilization processes. Prepares operating room case carts.

Medical Support Technicians (MSTs) receive guidance from more experienced staff members and require frequent and direct supervision.

All personnel who are involved in reprocessing of RMD are responsible for following the local Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) drafted in accordance with the manufacturer's written recommendations.

SPS and Infection Prevention and Control should be consulted when clarification of written instructions are needed.

No one should be reprocessing any reusable medical equipment based on vendor's verbal instructions alone; this is not an adequate practice.

10% - Utilize knowledge (of governing policies and regulating bodies) and experience to react to requests for emergent and/or urgent RMD supply needs ensuring positive outcomes 60% - Drives to clinics located outside HVAMC main campus to deliver clean RMD and pick-up contaminated RMD for transport back to main campus.

30% - Responsible for the collection and receipt of all used soiled supplies, instruments, or equipment. Operates vehicles in all types of weather and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents.

Drives in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems. Works inside and outside and is subject to drafts, noise, and varying temperatures.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm 10am-6:30pm, and 12:00pm-8:30pm w/rotating shifts.
