About the Position: This is a Medical Records Technician position at the Uniform Business Office, Resource Management Division, Bassett Army Community Hospital, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Federal employees in Alaska are currently entitled to receive a 1.49% Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) in addition to the base salary. This is subject to change.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes utilizing various office automated systems and software; collecting information for coding; retrieving medical records and reports from databases; and utilizing billing information from the healthcare systems.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Medical Records Administration or Health Information Administration.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9.

Add the two percentages. Major Duties:

  • Verify revenue codes, compliance codes, modifiers, and duplicate codes when indicated, to facilitate efficient and expeditious billing.
  • Utilize the Composite Health Care System (CHCS), Armed Forces Health Longitudinal Technology (AHTLA), Armed Forces Billing and Collection Utilization Solution (ABACUS) and/or current billing program.
  • Contact various clinics and/or health care providers in writing and/or telephonically to obtain additional information that meets the billing criteria.
  • Verify insurance/administrative information, and abstract pertinent administrative data of patient's records.
  • Responsible for file maintenance of retained copies of bills, including open and closed claims.
