Summary

This job involves using ultrasound technology to create images of patients' hearts to help diagnose heart conditions, working closely with cardiologists and other team members at a VA medical center.

Full Job Description

The echocardiographer works in coordination with the cardiology team at the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in order to provide ultrasound imaging of the heart for cardiac diagnostic testing.

Close interaction with the cardiologists who interpret the echocardiograms is imperative to provide the highest quality assessment of heart structure and function.

The echocardiographer will also work closely with trainees and the multidisciplinary team in the care of the cardiac patient.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Applicants must be fully qualified by the closing date of this announcement.

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education.

There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Licensure or Certification.

Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities Grade Determinations: In addition to meeting the basic requirements stated above, the following qualifications criteria must be met in determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates.

GS-7 Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled.

This would be experience which provided the individual with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to independently conduct difficult but standardized echocardiographic examinations.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Ability to scan transthoracic echocardiograms in all views with colorflow and some Doppler.

Ability to conduct cardiac testing to determine the severity and variety of cardiac problems, i.e., valvular dysfunction, myocardial wall kinesia, effusions, endocardial lesions, etc.

Knowledge of the set-up for transesophageal echocardiograms.

Ability to set up and adjust the ultrasound equipment to meet the conditions of the examination and the patient and to operate the equipment for more complex, but standardized procedures.

Assignment: At this level, medical instrument technicians (echocardiography) perform a range of standard, but complex, echocardiographic examinations with responsibility for calibrating all instruments prior to the procedure.

They are expected to keep an accurate record of tests, daily logs, and videotapes. They maintain cidex logs.

GS-8 Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled.

This would be experience which provided the overall knowledge, skills, and abilities to conduct diagnostic echocardiography examinations in complex and unusual cases.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Ability to produce diagnostic quality images and Doppler frequency shift recordings using M-mode, two-dimensional, pulsed and continuous wave Doppler spectral display, and colorflow Doppler imaging.

Knowledge of normal echocardiographic findings and deviations produced by a wide variety of cardiovascular diseases.

Ability to perform complex procedures such as cardiac studies of the four chambers of the heart and valves using sector scanning techniques to detect stenotic and incompetent valves, chamber enlargement, and pericardial effusion and cardiovascular studies deriving pressure gradients across obstructed valves, etc.

Ability to perform complementary ultrasonic examinations (including noninvasive) transthoracic, Bubble studies and contrast echocardiography, (invasive) stress echocardiography, and transesophageal echocardiography.

Ability to adapt transducer positioning, instrument controls, and examination techniques to the individual patient being studied and the problem being evaluated including recognizing pertinent abnormalities and documenting abnormal findings.

Assignment: This represents the full performance level.

Echocardiography technicians at this level identify and record anomalies indicative of disease, injury, or other medically significant condition from ultrasound imaging and simultaneous recordings of the Doppler.

They incorporate the causes and results of a variety of symptoms and conditions into a plan of ultrasonic diagnostic examination. GS-9.

In addition to the core competencies defined at the GS-8 full performance level, positions at this grade may be lead, supervisory, or non-supervisory with specialized advanced knowledge and assignments.

GS-9 Experience: At least 1 year experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level.

This would be experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required in order to provide all aspects of echocardiography services.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols, that pertain to Echocardiography.

*Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. *Ability to manage and supervise employees.

*Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training.

Certification: No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have one or more of the following certifications/Registrations: Registration by the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS) as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDS).

Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Lift Support (ACLS) certifications.

Assignments: For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

Physical Requirements: Duties are performed in areas designated for the Cardiology Hub and Spoke Network.

The incumbent must be able to travel to treatment areas with ease while pushing an Echo Machine. The incumbent must be able to stand for up to 8-10 hours while providing patient care.

The incumbent must be able to lift up to 20 pounds of equipment, supplies and records.

The incumbent must be able to manipulate the probes during the procedure, pushing against the patient's chest to obtain the appropriate images.

Additionally, the incumbent will be required to transport patients on stretchers, beds and wheelchairs. There is the potential for extended periods of sitting at computer terminals.

The incumbent is expected to use proper preventive ergonomic techniques to perform duties. Major Duties:

The Cardiac Echocardiography Technician will be a part of the VISN 15 Hub and Spoke Network. This position may require travel to multiple duty stations within the Cardiology Hub and Spoke Network.

The Cardiac Echocardiography Technician may also be required to report to different locations within the Cardiology Hub and Spoke Network for team meetings and other clinical responsibilities.

The Cardiac Echocardiography Technician has intimate knowledge of thoracic anatomy and physiology as related to cardiovascular function.

Duties include, but are not limited to: Performs high level cardiovascular testing with cardiology physicians and performs transthoracic echocardiograms, transesophageal echocardiograms and stress echocardiograms Knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology and biology, ultrasound physics, and cardiac sonography Fluent in the use and operation of the diagnostic equipment to provide adequate imaging of 2D, 3D, Doppler, M-mode imaging of the heart and associated structures Communicate effectively and professionally with patients and employees to help perform procedures in the care of cardiac patients Knowledge in proper and approved cleaning of the equipment is necessary Able to inventory and coordinate the ordering of supplies necessary for conducting echocardiograms Able to work with biomedical engineering to maintain all cardiac ultrasound equipment Ensures timely transfer of diagnostic images to the reporting server for inpatient and outpatient exams Ability to use word processing software and data entry software (Excel) to execute several functions such as storing and retrieving electronic documents and files, activating printers, formatting reports, letters, memoranda, and copying imaging data for in-house or out-of-house providers according to VAMC regulations Ability to use the Veterans health Information and Technology Architecture (VistA) to access information in the medical center computer system Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8 AM - 4:30 PM Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
