Full Job Description

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: Provides direct surgical support to patients undergoing surgery including the newest and most complex, state-of-the-art procedures in multi-specialties in the Main Operating Room at A.T.

Augusta Military Medical Center.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Assisting the surgeon with routine to complex medical procedures in an operating room; 2) Selecting appropriate surgical supplies, instruments and/or equipment for surgical procedures; 3) Operating surgical equipment; 4) Sterilizing medical instruments and equipment; and 5) preparing patients for surgical procedures in an operating room setting.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

OR Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Surgical Assisting.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12.

Then divide the total number of hours of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.

Training/Certification to perform surgical assisting preferred.

Major Duties:

  • Provides direct surgical support of a highly specialized nature to patients undergoing surgery including the newest and most complex, state-of-the-art procedures in multi-specialties.
  • Organizes required supplies (setup, connect, test, operate drills, saws, etc.) and instruments for surgical procedures.
  • Pass instruments and equipment to the surgeon during surgical procedures.
  • Ensures the availability of equipment, instruments, and supplies for surgical procedures.
  • Obtains sterile supplies, equipment, positioning devices, instrumentation, sutures, sponges, dressing, linens, etc., for specific procedures.
  • Performs sponge, needle and sharps count during various periods of all surgical procedures.
  • Assists in positioning of patients for procedures
  • Check patient's chart for surgical consent.
  • Ensures the patient has been correctly prepared for surgery.
  • Checks identification bands for completeness.
