Summary

This job involves analyzing health data to support programs that help women, infants, children, and those with special needs in Utah, including preparing reports for federal grants and linking information from various sources.

Key Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public Health, Social Sciences, or related field, or equivalent experience

  • High level of initiative, including taking ownership of tasks and seeking additional responsibilities
  • Strong communication skills that build relationships and support collaborative work
  • Experience linking data from multiple sources such as vital records, Medicaid, and programmatic data
  • Assistance in developing evidence-based strategies and updating national performance measures
  • Understanding of HRSA Title V MCH block grant reporting and planning (preferred)

MCH Epidemiologist III


As a Title V MCH epidemiologist, you will have the opportunity to help make a difference in the lives of women, infants, children, adolescents, and children with special health care needs by providing analytic support to programs within the Division of Family Health.

You will have the opportunity to work with multiple data sources, link and analyze data sets, and report on grant funded services provided to communities in Utah.

You will have regular opportunities to assist programs with their data needs.

This position offers good opportunities to apply and further develop written communication skills in the form of agency Health Status Updates and special office reports.

Requirements

  • Assists in the annual HRSA Title V MCH block grant report and application by completing assigned narrative sections
  • Links data from multiple sources and completes technical data forms for the block grant using data provided by vital records, Medicaid, newborn screening, the Utah Birth Defect Network, and other programmatic data
  • Assists programs in developing evidence based strategy measures tied to national performance measures
  • Uses standardized techniques to update target objectives for national performance measures
  • Analyzes Federally Available Data from multiple data sources provided by HRSA and assists programs in interpreting that data for performance measures
  • Assists with public comment on planned block grant activities for the upcoming fiscal year
  • Provides analytic support to programs within the Division of Family Health and some Division of Population Health programs (particularly the Oral Health Program)
  • Assists programs with research design, including reliable sample selection, database design, survey development, data visualization, data analysis and report writing

Qualifications

Required:
  • Master’s degree or higher OR equivalent experience in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public Health, Social Sciences or related field.

  • At least 2 years of professional experience that involves collecting, analyzing, and presenting different types of data, including experience working with statistical software packages such as SAS, R, or Stata.

  • Displays a high level of initiative, including the ability and willingness to take ownership of work, recognize assignments or tasks that need to be completed, seek out additional assignments or tasks, and help others.

  • Communicates in a way that builds relationships and fosters collaborative work.


Preferred:
  • An understanding of the HRSA Title V MCH block grant and its annual reporting and planning requirements. This includes understanding the technical requirements for several data forms that are submitted annually for the MCH block grant submission.

  • An understanding of the various programs housed within the Division of Family Health and more specifically the Offices of Maternal and Child Health and Children with Special Health Care Needs.

Additional Information

The typical office setting for this job is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated. However, you may encounter some risks that are associated with any office setting, for example, the safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.

Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to work and there are no physical demands required to perform the work.

Standard Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Limited in-state travel is anticipated. As funding allows, there may also be opportunities to attend out-of-state professional conferences and/or trainings.
