This job involves performing everyday maintenance and small repairs around a VA healthcare facility in Corpus Christi, Texas, such as fixing plumbing, painting walls, mounting furniture, gardening, and helping with other urgent tasks.

This position serves as a maintenance worker (minor maintenance/repairs) throughout the VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System (VATVCBHCS).
This position is located in the Facilities Management/Engineering Service and reports to the Maintenance Worker Supervisor.
The incumbent is responsible for routine and emergency maintenance and repair as well as assisting other trades with emergency work orders and repairs.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.
Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.
Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Major Duties:
The duties include but are not limited to general maintenance of support work, survey of buildings, review, and completion of tasks in the maintenance and repair of service equipment, on-the-job training, learning new concepts and procedures and cross training of similar or lower grades.
The position is delegated technical responsibility for satisfactory accomplishment of a variety of minor maintenance tasks.
Incumbent shall serve as a Maintenance Technician and have responsibility for multiple trade activities relative to maintenance, repair, and replacement to isolate or resolve malfunction or make necessary adjustments and repairs requiring the use of a variety of trades and practices associated with the repairing or replacing the following systems: plumbing, patch & paint, wall mounting, furniture, escorting, administrative duties, gardening, and refurbishing any part, or area of, any VCB facilities.
Typical work assignments include the performance of visual examination, operational tests, work order requests and verbal requests from the Supervisor. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m.

Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Worker / PDHA740-0718-A Physical Requirements: The work is requires considerable movement around the facility, prolonged standing, climbing up and down ladders, working in cramped or awkward positions while installing items; reaching, lifting, and bending while using hand and power tools; lifting, pushing and pulling objects of varying weights up to 20 pounds and less.
Occasionally lifts or moves, with assistance, moderately heavy objects weighing more than 50 pounds. A great amount of kneeling, bending, and climbing of stairways is required.
Standing on ladders for long periods of time at various heights. Employee must be able to wear safety and protective clothing, or equipment prescribed for the work setting.
May be fit tested for proper PPE and respirator.
Working Conditions: The incumbent is subject to working with power tools, fast moving cutting tools, exposure to noxious gases and fumes, infrared and ultraviolet radiation heat, flying sparks, electrical shock, burns, falls from working on slippery or unstable surfaces.
The incumbent is required to travel in between the different facilities within the Health Care System. The work is done indoors and outdoors.
The incumbent is exposed to extremes of heat and cold, dust, dirt, noise, grease, fumes, and moisture, as well as outside the normal indoor environment of the facility.
The employee is required to wear protective clothing to minimize risks.
