Full Job Description

Serve as a Maintenance Worker for Facilities Management Service, at the VA Healthcare System, Bay Pines, Florida. The primary purpose of the position is to provide support for one of several shops.

These vacancies are for the Carpentry Shop, Electric Shop, Equipment Shop, and/or the Interior Design/Planning Section of the Healthcare System.

Selected candidates will work directly for one of these four sections. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.

Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair Interpret Instructions, Specifications (includes blueprint reading) Materials Measuring Instruments Technical Practices Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Major Duties:

Duties include, but are not limited to: Operate/use simple hand and power tools including saws, hammers, drills, planes, etc.

Perform minor tool maintenance, department storage assistance, removal and installation of furniture, art and signage, and transportation of materials and furnishing between sites.

Knowledge of various trade principles, materials, modular systems furniture installation and safety standards. Reading instructions, manuals, diagrams and other job aids.

Constructing, altering, and demolishing buildings, structures, partitions, panels, tool cabinets, casework, bookcases, work benches, modular systems furniture and other items using wood, wood substitutes, and composite building materials.

Altering and constructing a variety of brick, block, & related structures including various types of walls, ceiling, and floor coverings.

Performing custodial duties by hand or with powered equipment, jobsite clean-up and organization of materials.

If working for Equipment Shop: Knowledge of med gas, kitchen equipment, small vehicles (golf carts), floor care machines, washers/dryers and other hospital equipment.

If working for the Carpentry Shop: Ability to assess and replace ceiling tiles per Joint Commission and EOC standards, Provide support to the Locksmith as needed for battery changes, lubrication, organization and/or delivery of items.

Work indoors/outdoors on ladders/scaffold/mobile elevated work platforms (MEWP), perform roofing/gutter maintenance from MEWP (i.e. clearing debris by hand or power equipment).

Perform minor repairs caulking/sealing at direction of journeyman.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Worker/PD07872A Physical Requirements: This position requires working in awkward and cramped positions and frequently requires kneeling, stooping and bending.

Duties require lifting heavy objects up to 50 lbs. stacking heavy materials, e.g., concrete and masonry products, etc.

and frequently loading and unloading of building materials and furnishings on and off delivery vehicles, and pushing hand powered wheel barrows with construction debris for disposal in trash dumpsters, and cement for placement and application by others.

Employee may be required to work in or around hazardous materials, such mold and asbestos.

Working Conditions: Incumbent primarily works indoors, occasionally in tight, cramped spaces, in hot and high humid conditions, often dusty and dirty.

Work with small powered equipment which subject employee to a chance of injury due to nature of work involved.
