The city of Las Vegas Invites applicants for Maintenance Worker. This position performs semi-skilled work in construction, maintenance, and related service activities.

Supervision Received

Receives general supervision from higher-level staff.

Examination Process

A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The examination for this recruitment will be a written examination, weighted 100%, and will be used to place candidates on the eligible list.

WRITTEN TEST DATE: Tuesday, March 31, 2026 and/or Wednesday, April 1, 2026

Eligible List

You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.

Selection Process

Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview (if applicable).

Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job.

Some positions may require preliminary background checks.

The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/ or future openings which may include part-time or full-time positions.

Requirements

Essential Functions:

  1. Performs general semi-skilled maintenance of city property, such as cleaning and maintaining roads, alleyways, streets, sanitary sewers, parks, city-owned open spaces, single family properties, cemetery and playground equipment; assists other staff in construction and maintenance work; loads and unload tools, materials and supplies.
  2. Assists in construction and repair of concrete bridges throughout the city.
  3. Operates pneumatic and hand tools; may operate light equipment; cleans and maintains equipment.
  4. Sets up and takes down traffic warning devices and barricades for traffic control as directed.
  5. May spray herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers under the direction of a licensed applicator.
  6. Mix materials to be used on job assigned.
  7. Identifies major repairs needed and reports to higher level staff.
  8. May maintain inventory of equipment, materials and supplies.
  9. Maintains a variety of automated and manual records, logs and files.

When Assigned to Rapid Response Team

  1. Cleans street medians, public rights-of-way and other city property, including removing items such as illegal signs, graffiti, trash, debris, vegetation, vagrant camps, fences, shopping carts, basketball hoops, junk vehicles and abandoned appliances.
  2. Drains stagnant swimming pools on vacant private property to reduce public health and safety risks.

Marginal Functions:

  1. Performs basic repairs to drip and pop-up irrigation systems.
  2. Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment.
  3. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

Experience:

One year of experience performing field maintenance work within the assigned area of work is desirable.

Training:

Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

Licenses and Certifications:

Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.

Condition of continued employment: Within 15 days of initial hire, provide documentation of completion within the last five years of an OSHA-10 course in construction industry safety and health hazard recognition and prevention, developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S.

Department of Labor. Completion card must be continuously maintained while employed in this classification.

When assigned to pool maintenance: Possession of a Swimming Pool Service Technician or Pool Operator certification from the Southern Nevada Health District on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.

Special Requirement:

May be required to respond to emergencies during non-working hours.
