Full Job Description

This position is located in the Engineering Service at the VA Medical Center in Bath, NY.

The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of architectural, components of buildings requiring the use of a variety of trades and practices.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The work requires frequent lifting and carrying heavy materials and parts weighing in excess of 40 pounds with occasional lifting up to 90 pounds.

Incumbent works off of scaffolding, ladders, and other raised devices. Other requirements include walking, standing, crawling, reaching, kneeling, bending, pushing and pulling.

The incumbent will frequently work in uncomfortable and awkward positions. Work requires repetitive motions such as troweling concrete or drywall mud.

Work is performed inside and outside (heat, cold, under and outside of building). Installations, inspections and repairs are made under dirty, noisy and odorous producing conditions.

Exposed to fall risk from ladders or scaffolds and is frequently exposed to the danger of strains, cuts, bruises, burns and infection.

Wears standard personal protective equipment including eye protection, hearing protection, steel-toe boots, and gloves.

Incumbent is required to wear respiratory protection due to dust and dirt generation or other exposures. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.

(Includes Blueprint Reading) Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair, etc.

Knowledge of Materials Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic) Without more than normal supervision IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

Major duties and responsibilities will include: Performing maintenance and repair of architectural components of buildings; Installing, modifying, and repairing furniture items, doors, windows, floor coverings, baseboards, and signage; Conducting inspections and performing routine maintenance on area of responsibility assigned; Constructing/framing metal stud dry wall partitions and drywalling, mudding, taping, and plastering; Patching and painting various surfaces; Performing welding duties using electric and wire feed, acetylene and/or inert gas shielded welding processes to weld various types of metal in various sizes, shapes, and thickness; Constructing concrete structures (walls, slabs, footers, forms, etc.); Planning and measuring various materials according to requirements and dimensions outlined in instructions; Reading and interpreting work orders, instructions, sketches, blueprints, building codes, and wiring diagrams; Using and maintaining equipment and tools common to various trades; Making repairs on and performing preventative maintenance on shop tools and equipment to ensure safe and proper function; Working with wood or wood substitute materials, gypsum board or fiber-cement board, concrete/rebar, glass, etc.; Overseeing the requisition of materials, tools, and equipment as necessary to perform assigned duties; Planning the materials, tools, and techniques needed and for completing the work; Lays tile, brick, concrete blocks, and masonry units for unique designs and patterns for either repair or renovation; Installs door hardware such as closures, slide and glides, hinges, kick plates, punch and pulls and lock sets, (cylindrical, combination and mortise); Locksmith prepare keys / maintain key order system, install cores, and perform maintenance on door hardware; Performing related duties as required.
